Received an offer for an EA position for $57k. I informed the company I would like $80k-$90k and they came back and offered $80k (+ bonuses, profit sharing 401k). Now my current company wants 24 hours to counter, I was paid $66k and recently got a raise to $72k but now they will minimally have to offer $90k+ for me to even consider staying.

Should I set sail for new horizons ? Should I counter again with the new company or is that greedy considering how far they came up? EA is a new position.

There is a reason that most people who accept counter offers still end up leaving within a few months; because money alone is usually not the only factor that causes people to look. If they could have been paying you $12k+ more for a year or more before you sought another offer elsewhere, then you know that they don't value you or they would have paid you more sooner.

Take the new offer. Congrats and good luck!

Agreed, one of my regrets to be completely honest. I walked into my boss’s office told him that I was quitting. Got a better job offer across the street. He stood up, walked across the room, closed the door and said how much money is it gonna take to keep you here. I gave him the number he didn’t even flinch. He gave it to me. Then the next six months was pretty miserable. I got more money, but still hated the culture the structure the environment and then ended up quitting six months later. I should’ve just accepted the job, stuck to my guns and left. By staying I missed a great opportunity to join a great company.

Why be loyal to a company that could RIF a person, maybes give the person 15 min to get their stuff and escort them to their car or the property gate to ensure they leave. If two weeks notice is the minimum professional standards for employees, why aren’t large company’s held to the same standard.
My last company did give me two weeks, but I’ve seen the same company pop a surprise HR meeting and the person barely got time to get their personal stuff, and it wasn’t for cause.

Update : Well my current company after 48 hours from notice, congratulated me on finding a new role and did not counter! I’m actually not upset as I think it just confirmed the advice you all gave which is to try something new that will sharpen my skills ! I’m looking forward to a new position at a new company 🥳 my impression thus far has been great as far as the executive I will work for so I’m really looking forward to it. Thanks all for helping me think through this!

When you applied, you were dissatisfied already, so when someone is willing to offer you what you feel you deserve, you should just go with it. If the old company treated you right, you wouldn't have such a large pay gap. That said, the reason for jumping in offering may hide some dark side to their company, so make sure to go eye open before you sign, but you likely should take it and move on.

like

I say set sails, you have nothing to lose, because if it doesn't work out, not only is it experience, you already now know that your skills are worth far more then what you've been paid.

Hmm, I left a job 2 jobs ago for a company who just randomly found me on Linkedin, they offered me a $15,000 increase from my current salary at the time. I had no intention of ever leaving my job at the time, I had it good where I was and I told this new employer my requirements and it was written in my offer letter. My current position offered me $10,000 increase to stay. I chose not to take it and to go to this new company. It was the wrong decision. That owner did not hold up to anything that was promised and I told him, he didn't like being told I was being taken advantage of basically and he fired me just short of being there a year. fast forward now to a new position I am in now, 2 years in and the toxicity here is affecting me to the point I am not trying to find something new. Moral of the story I should have never left the position I planned on retiring from. If you have it good where you are, it might be a good idea to just stay. You just never know what you are getting into. Of course, I can see what people are saying about taking a counter offer as well.

Hello 👋
I'm new here, does anyone has a job offer?
I'm available....🙂

Thank you all for your input. I truly value having this perspective & viewpoints of others and I do think I’m going to leave and go to a new company.

BEST wishes to you at your new employment! May there be little to no toxicity and your future bright! Look ahead!

Don’t burn bridges with your new prospect by pitting their offer against what your current may do. If your current company valued your work and contribution to them, they should have paid you accordingly. You were looking for a reason. Remember the windshield is bigger than the rear view mirror fit a reason

like

Companies are willing to counter because they know they can pay you more short-term while behind your back they look for your replacement. Never accept a counter offer unless theres a contract in place guaranteeing your employment. Thats rare as many jobs are at-will. I’d take the new offer.

like

100 percent THIS. Absolutely no question that when you told your employer that you are leaving, they scramble to figure out how to cover THEIR needs. It is considered a bonus move by HR if they can convince you to stay and best of all: Blow up the new employer for trying to poach you from them), then the death blow to you directly when you are replaced within a year. They punish you, punish the competitor, and probably got you to train the new replacement. NEVER take a job counteroffer. Never.

like

In 90% of the cases, a person who accepts a counter-offer from their current employer is gone within a year.

I had a similar opportunity as the OP and my former employer counter-offered with a 66% pay increase and they gave me a 5-digit retention bonus payable in two installments (50% at signing) to stay for another year and reassess later. I took the offer and stayed for a year. At the one-year mark I went to NYC HQ and sat with my boss who offered me more money (while paying the other half of the bonus and offering a new retention bonus). My job was to build a national practice area. She asked if I would stay for 50% more plus another retention bonus. I said the answer to that was whether or not we would have that national practice area. She answered no, we shook hands, and I gave four weeks notice.

I learned that a company will only pay you the minimum they need to get you to stay. I also learned that sometimes you're dealing with a rational employer and the relationship is very open and honest. I actually left for a mere 12% increase in salary at the new company (where I have been the last 26 years), but they had the environment I needed.

I agree with everyone else, go for it! Live the new experience to learn something new. Don’t limit yourself. You have nothing to loose! Congratulations!

Oof, now that you current company knows that you are flight risk things are icy. If you were looking to leave, got the floor that you were asking for, then why do you care if your current company counters?

like

I agree but in my case it’s not HR (myself) that gloats about how much money the company is saving on payroll, it’s the GM and the Finance Manager. So many are underpaid for the amount of work expected but the job market is saturated so most of us are staying put for now.

like

Take the 80k plus options & be grateful you are no longer one of us, the underemployed.

I’m definitely counting my blessings and praying for a better job market for all of us !

like

Set sail, you could grow and learn new skills. Also that is a huge jump and not likely possible for your current company, not worth losing the new and better offer. Don't keep them waiting!

like

Above and beyond that, if current employer does match, itll likely come with strings and a new target on their back to justify the budget

like

Do not stay in your old job. They will eventually get rid of you with an excuse. Enjoy your new position.

like

Thank you ! I’m certainly looking forward to it

Counters are usually a bad idea. Leave and try something new!

There are a lot of missing variables in this message. How’s the culture, people, boss at your current company? Do you like it aside from salary? Are there other reasons you are considering leaving? How are the benefits? Perks, flexibility? You don’t really know how all of this is at new company. If it’s just about money I would consider staying. Need more info to provide sound advice.

like

99.9% of the time if someone is considering leaving, it's about more than money.

like

Never take a counter offer. Essentially they are admitting that you were worth more and paid you what they could get away with. And I guarantee you that if the time comes, you will be at the top of the layoff list.

like

Oh, do you mean don't take the counter at their current company? I thought you meant don't take the counter at the new company. IDK

Try something new!

like

Not sure how long you've been with your current company, or what their standard practice is on increases, or if you asked to be increased to $80K, but if it takes an outside offer for your current company to want to make a counter offer, I'd say head for a new horizon. Also, your new company, though I think they lowballed you to begin with, made a huge jump in salary offer to meet your demand. That is a good sign, I'd say. (Also, they know they can't push you around, so you're getting off on a good foot.)

like

I 100% agree with you ! And I was at the other company for 4 years so I was disappointed to say the least with the pay but in this market I took what I could get. So with this new offer I am very excited and appreciative they were so generous with me coming through the door.

Seriously at a loss if I'm missing something or if folks spend the same on seeing a therapist. I'm curious as to how a lot of folks are able to afford the price tag.
