Received an offer for an EA position for $57k. I informed the company I would like $80k-$90k and they came back and offered $80k (+ bonuses, profit sharing 401k). Now my current company wants 24 hours to counter, I was paid $66k and recently got a raise to $72k but now they will minimally have to offer $90k+ for me to even consider staying.

Should I set sail for new horizons ? Should I counter again with the new company or is that greedy considering how far they came up? EA is a new position.

There is a reason that most people who accept counter offers still end up leaving within a few months; because money alone is usually not the only factor that causes people to look. If they could have been paying you $12k+ more for a year or more before you sought another offer elsewhere, then you know that they don't value you or they would have paid you more sooner.

Take the new offer. Congrats and good luck!

Agreed, one of my regrets to be completely honest. I walked into my boss’s office told him that I was quitting. Got a better job offer across the street. He stood up, walked across the room, closed the door and said how much money is it gonna take to keep you here. I gave him the number he didn’t even flinch. He gave it to me. Then the next six months was pretty miserable. I got more money, but still hated the culture the structure the environment and then ended up quitting six months later. I should’ve just accepted the job, stuck to my guns and left. By staying I missed a great opportunity to join a great company.

As someone who worked in recruitment, taking a counter offer is never good.

Why be loyal to a company that could RIF a person, maybes give the person 15 min to get their stuff and escort them to their car or the property gate to ensure they leave. If two weeks notice is the minimum professional standards for employees, why aren’t large company’s held to the same standard.
My last company did give me two weeks, but I’ve seen the same company pop a surprise HR meeting and the person barely got time to get their personal stuff, and it wasn’t for cause.

The fact that they were so low 57k makes me concern . However, you have to look at PTO as well

like

Well part of it is in the state I’m in is a low cost of living so that is a good salary for an entry level EA and it is a new role. So I think it was perhaps lack of having someone in that role, also I came in with more experience than what they were looking for so in this case the salary jump was reasonable

like

Set Sails... It shouldn't take a better offer from another company for your current company to see your worth... If they didn't want to lose you, they should have let you know how valuable you were to them at that last raise. Congrats, take the new position...go where you are valued.

like

Why didn't your current company see your value earlier? This is a 'knee jerk' offer and in my experience things never pan out well as there is animosity somewhere along the lines and they will expect you to work 24/7 not quite but almost. In my experience it is always better to move on but never burn bridges. What are the working conditions / hours at the new place? I know it is 10k less on face value but you said there was bonuses and profit sharing too! My gut is ALWAYS to move on but that's usually because the reason I looked elsewhere in the first place is because the place was as toxic as! If the current place is not toxic and they agree not to make you work all the hours that God sends then it's your call. How established/safe is each position?

like

Do not take the counter. You'll be let go within 6 months at the outside. Go with the new outfit - they stepped up.

I once found myself in a tough career spot. After nearly two decades with an organization I truly believed in, another group came after me with an offer. My own employer countered, and then the new group countered again—it felt good to be wanted. In the end, I chose to stay where I was, thinking loyalty mattered. Looking back, that was the biggest mistake of my career. Less than a year later, they let me go.

like

Go with the new company! That’s a generous offer

like

I get a few things. The first is your new offer. Offering $57 and then a $23k jump to the lowest number you gave them. They were taking advantage with $57 and then pitching low with the counter. Not giving me a great feeling. Part two of that - is step one in a new place is a considerable difference to your existing role.

Next I see a counter coming from your existing is simply a late pitch to retain you when they have known for a very long time you were paid low. Is be telling them the money is going to need to be decent as the new role pay is a lot higher. The. When they come back - regardless of what it is, you simply counter wanting back pay at their offered rate. they offer $73, they you ask for backpay for thos year at that rate. Argument is - they know exactly what your skill, work ethic and ability are. They also now admit that you were always worth more than paid. Bot only that but they are willing to pay it but only because they are definately going to lose you to someone else who does realize the wage and value you hold to them.

Then take the reduced back pay they will offer, work for 6 months and then leave. Not disingenuous at all, it’s called getting paid and it’s called working for the company that you want to work for. How you get to that / is up to you.

like

Go to the new job..if they valued you at the existing job they should have been paying you what you were worth.....RUN to the new horizon!

Do you love your current job? Are you on-track to acquire new skills? What are your colleagues and boss like? Or do you have dread on Sundays just thinking about going to work the next day? Does the new job excite you? Does it bring some interesting challenges? How have job boards rated the company? Will you have a chance to expand your career options? These are the primary things you need to think about. Sometimes a new job is invigorating to the mind and soul!

I am a long time recruiter and I advise people all the time to really think carefully before accepting a counter offer. Additionally, I tell folks to go back and remember why they started a job search in the first place. When I have had candidates take a counter offer, they are usually either looking to leave again several months down the road OR that employer that countered let them go. If you show that you started a job search and accepted a counter it will always be in the back of the minds of the management team. Good luck!

like

Take the offer. You are in better position before, while others are still on the sidelines. Be grateful and humble. Congratulations

at the end of the day as many comments before me. its not the money, its the environment 8 to 10 hours a day is a long time to spend in an environment that you do not want to be in,

I believe you moved to a new position. Although there could be tons of factors why you are looking for a switch. You didn't mention any. A simple piece of advice. Do not stay at the company from where you decided to move AND 'informed them' as well. They may give you a raise to retain you (because they don't have a replacement YET), but they will never look at you or give you the same respect. They will leave you the moment they find a suitable replacement. You may not have other options at that time. This may not apply to every company out there, but it does apply to most. We are all replaceable.

as a manager, here is how the conversation went with HR: "Hey, this guy on your team got an offer for 80K plus bonus, will you miss him/do you need him/do you want to keep him". "Nah". K, Thx, Bye.

When a possible employer low ball you with a salary offer. It is not a good sign but rather a sign that in the future will try to minimize your salary and perhaps other opportunities.

My wife worked for a recruiter for years. Her boss always told her that you should never take a counteroffer from your current employer since you were already looking to leave. You are leaving for a reason, and the counteroffer will not change those reasons. Take the new EA offer.

like

Humbly, if your original company couldn’t figure out your worth before the outside offer, they likely will do the bare minimum once they keep you. Better to go somewhere new where they believe in your value rather than having to prove your worth.

like

I would say leave… other wise they would give you money for 1 month and then they would just fire you the next month!

like

I will ask you to honestly re-consider the counter offer. Check how is your work life balance? R u getting enough time. Do you like your current role? Most importantly, how are your colleagues? If answer for all these is positive then stay without a doubt. You are in a stronger position in existing company..yrs of exp. lay off will be off the charts and even if it happens compensation is hefty. Now this new company EA are client specific, if client says no and looking at the package they will sell your soul to the client...they can kick u out anytime...The company sack u immediately...they are paying you to make money off you. Avoid consultancy role..its highly volatile and risk that they may sack u within pobation is very high. Or you can ignore all this and take a leap of faith...Good luck!

Consider the $57k offer as a sign (and not a good one).If salary is your biggest frustration, I suggest taking an 85k+ position at your current org citing "better the devil you know".

Has anyone ever posted a general marketing position? We have an open position on our marketing team but we are unsure what type of position to offer. We have a wide variety of needs but don’t necessarily need to have this future person have all these skills. For example we need someone with great copywriting skills and also need someone who is great at digital marketing. This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.
