Bullshit. London recruiters will say anything. Which firm is it?
The only level fudging I know about is that advisory (audit, risk, forensic, finance) are typically one level below consulting levels.
e.g. Accenture Manager = Deloitte Consulting Manager = Deloitte Audit Senior Manager
At EY its actually quite the opposite because there is an extra rank in the UK between SM
and Partner, which effectively makes a UK SM more junior than a US one. So this is definitely not true across the board!
It depends on the firm. I’m a senior manager in industry and my US counterpart is called a director, even though internally we are the same ‘level’
Because UK economy is shiite. GDP per capita is still 20% lower than pre-recession peak ($50k in 2007 -> $39k in 2018) whereas US is 20% higher ($48k in 2007 -> $60k in 2018). The GBP has fallen from £1.8/$ to £1.3/$. In terms of GDP per capita, the UK as a whole would be the second-poorest US state (just above Mississippi).
It’s kind of generally accepted that a specific grade in the UK or US will be of higher quality than the equivalent grade in the other member firms... so I’d say there’s some truth in it...
London also tends to have faster promotion cycles. Median time to manager from graduate for big4 consulting/ACN is 5 years. The first line manager I reported to from India as a graduate is now a level below me.
I'm not sure about between companies but internally I think thats possible eg person doing a deloitte manager role in the UK would be SM in Australia
Update: out of 100 people who had signed contracts in place only 8 were brought in under approval from the board. The exception was made off the amount of work in the pipe and overall risk and need from the business. The rest got some kind of lay off pay.
