This isn’t new. It was never included in the original regulations either. It was a grey area, and also excludes PAs and NPs. We need to work with elected officials to have it added and protected.

Fine then I shouldn’t have to pay back my loans either now !!!

Ugh obv
I wonder what the rationale is behind this and how anybody is OK with it? It seems like an objectively bad idea for the entire healthcare industry.
Good question. It's probably being proposed by someone of very good health who never experienced the need of the very long list of skills of a Nurse to keep them better off health wise, or simply keeping them alive longer!
This is being proposed under 34 Code of Federal Regulation (34 CFR). IF THIS CODE IS ADOPTED IT BECOMES ENFORCEABLE LAW!! THE UNITED STATES ALREADY HAS A SHORTAGE OF PROFESIONAL NURSES!! IF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SEVERELY LIMITS LOANS TO FUND NURSING EDUCATION, THE SHORTAGE WILL SEVERELY WORSEN!! THIS WILL SEVERELY HARM THE QUALITY OF HEALTHCARE WE THE PEOPLE RECEIVE IN THE UNITED STATES!!
I get why this sounds alarming, but this doesn’t line up with anything that’s ACTUALLY BEEN CONFIRMED
34 CFR just refers to Department of Education regulations, and while finalized rules do become enforceable, there isn’t any credible proposal that removes nursing from being considered a profession or cuts off federal student loans for nursing students.
Financial aid eligibility is based on things like accreditation and program approval, not excluding specific careers like nursing. Nursing programs at every level still qualify for federal funding.
Some of the confusion may be coming from proposed rules around program accountability (like outcomes or debt levels), but those apply broadly and don’t single out nursing or eliminate access to loans.
With the nursing shortage, it makes sense people are concerned, but there’s no solid evidence that funding for nursing education is being restricted the way this post suggests. Definitely worth double-checking against official sources before assuming the worst.
I understand why this would be concerning, but this information doesn’t appear to be accurate.
Nursing is widely recognized as a professional field, and there hasn’t been any verified guidance from the U.S. Department of Education indicating that nurses are being excluded from that category. Federal student aid eligibility is based on things like school accreditation and program approval, not on removing specific professions like nursing.
At this point, there’s no credible evidence that nursing students would lose access to federal loans because of a change like the one described here. Posts like this can sometimes come from misunderstandings of proposed regulations or incomplete information.
It’s always a good idea to double-check claims like this against official sources before assuming the worst—especially when it could create unnecessary stress for students planning their education.
Nursing continues to be a respected and essential profession, and nothing currently suggests that federal funding for nursing education is being taken away.
