Why not link him to a couple of YouTube videos or some trainings? If he’s not getting it when you repeat yourself over and over, it’s not magically going to click... Feed him some easy examples for him to practice vlookup, ask him to take notes on how it works, etc. And don’t pick up the phone when you’re off...
Very basic Excel skills (vlookups, no keyboard shortcuts, etc)., I’m constantly repeating myself, and he isn’t learning as quickly I would’ve hoped and also as the client director would’ve hoped, so we are on the same page (we have weekly one-on-ones to catch up). I continue to mentor and the client believes I am doing a good job, but I spend so much time helping him it’s impacting how much time I have to do my own work, training, etc. and I’m getting very frustrated. This is my first time in a people management position, so maybe I’m not doing everything I could be doing? Any advice? What if this continues?
Is this government staff augmentation?
Also, I was remote for the past week, but he randomly called me 3 different times amounting to nearly 2 hours (one call was 45 mins and I spent 15 minutes helping him with a vlookup) to confirm and ask me if he was doing something correctly. It’s the same task he’s been doing for the last few months so I don’t understand how he hasn’t fully grasped the concept yet. Am I judging too harshly? I understand I am there to help the client, but at some point the hand holding needs to stop? If it makes any difference, this is a supply chain role, in which he has a CSCP certification.
For what it’s worth, I do appreciate your desire to help a client and respect you spending time to think about it deeply. In my opinion, I would ask him to write down the keyboard shortcut on a sticky (and at what point would you use it) and put it on his computer. I’d say that you really want to teach him all about the cool thinks you can do in Excel and you believe he could learn it and enjoy it, but he needs to learn basic shortcuts first, and this is the best technique to learn them. If he refuses... then I’m not sure. Escalate?
