I guess it's like the article says, it's been a challenging year for luxury. But really, how much money could they be saving by getting rid of a light show? You'd think after the initial costs of designing it and acquiring the hardware the cost of doing it every year wouldn't be that horrendous.
It's dumb, and like the article mentions, to do this on their 100th anniversary when it could've been something special is just short sighted.
I absolutely hate the foot traffic from the light shows, but I recognize that the light show itself is special for many, tourists and locals alike. To take away that iconic holiday 'magic' to save costs is just a sign of Saks downfall to come.
I agree with the sentiment on the 100 year anniversary being a horrible time to scrap it but i understand that foot traffic decreasing is helpful too. Can’t make everyone happy!
Saks holiday light show - another victim of the 2023/2024 layoffs.
Rather than canceling it, I would have hoped they could find another way to make more money off of the light show, steering foot traffic into the store.
I find the reactions a little overdramatic tbh, like Forbes "It is a decision that Saks will regret." But it does seem like it's part of an overall criticism towards HBC running Saks.
