FYI. It’s not just that people won’t read past page1. 7 page resumes get skipped entirely bc it shows someone can’t be concise.
I have 20 years of experience across six companies and I will never allow my CV to exceed 2 pages
Start with professional summary (3-4 lines summarizing YOU/your experience)
Then more detail on the last 5-7 years of your career. But you also have to show what you did before even if just the dates, title, company and one sentence on what you did there
End it with education, any special awards/publications Etc. And if you have special interests / volunteer activities add a couple bullets - it makes you more interesting.
No more than 2 pages my friend. Happy to review if you’d like
Wider margins. Smaller font
3 pages max ..remove heavy details , and keep project descriptions high level . Also remove old jobs that are not relevant , or keep their description very short
Force yourself to write one line bullets. Only 2-3 bullets for experience older than 10 years
If it is 7 pages, it is not a resume
As a former recruiter, I can tell you that anything over one-two pages is too much.
Pay Robynn Storey to do it. You can find her on LinkedIn. Storeyline Resumes. Very thorough interview process, gathering of appraisals, awards, etc. You will not be disappointed.
Relevant projects only for each role.
^ inaccurate. You are as good as the collection of experiences and skills you bring to the table
M1 ... I know it comes with the territory. Nothing wrong with a good smackdown when called for however. 😎
Any idea how much much would be the approximate cost IBM3? I am in the same boat as OP
I paid $525, I think. Included resume, all-purpose cover letter, LinkedIn overhaul, and publishing my availability to her entire network of recruiters. Can’t underestimate that value.
Yes BCG1 ... thats the point. I’m not going to be sending a 7 page resume. It is merely a collection of all experiences, value add, etc over the past 20+ yrs. raw data. These are all helpful posts .. I like the external help suggestion.
Ditto IBM2 - pay a professional
IBM3 - what was the outcome of working with her?
Man 500 bucks for a document that is reviewed for 10 seconds
I had my best results year ever so I never let her activate the outbound notifications and didn’t pursue jobs. Thinking I will soon given the current IBM climate. Waiting to survey clients at Think2018 this week to gauge future viability at IBM. Did share resume with some external peers and they all were impressed
One more Q. My experience dates back to the early 90’s ... should I keep dates tied to roles that far back? .. or stay away from dating myself too much
Only write in key skills and what is relevant in the work now and in the future. The rest, as they say, is history. Is the 90’s experience relevant? And you are only as good as your last job 😉
