I can attest to this. I am in marketing and whenever i hear a sales person explain their solution or product I’m like…how are you functioning?
Anyways-the true “sales” roles are director level typically…I’d suggest building up your network of buyers outside the firm. I’m thinking something in products and tech, like a portfolio manager role, might be a good next step?
I’m trying to switch to sales too. Stuck behind a desk too much and not enough peopling ( and not enough money). A lot of jobs want sales experience, so it’s been tough. I came really close once. Use your network, or take advantage of your vendors. I’ve started networking more and joined (became a board member) for a local chapter inside my industry. The “no sales” bit me in the butt. Also, network is huge too, ya gotta know the players and how to get to them.
I’m aiming for a position specifically for accounting software providers, because I’m familiar with the client base of accounting firms. And I know I can present a Demo 100x better than the boring ass crap I heard in every one I’ve ever seen from the client perspective. Does anyone know someone I can connect with?
We sell accounting and ERP systems (for the last 33 years) and would love to connect. Everyone starts somewhere in sales. Our last hire had very little sales experience and no ERP sales experience. Align your expectations that it will take you some time to learn not only products offerings but competitors strengths and weaknesses and then layer in the sales process itself. Probably a year before you feel proficient, and another year to build out referral network in addition to client acquisition.
