Senior UX designer here. I am trying to make the switch from agency/consulting to client side. I’m having a little bit of difficulty defining metrics for my work, given the nature of agency work is project to project. Any advice for those who have made that jump?

@OP start with, what were the metrics that drive the project in the first place? What was the client tracking? What kind of metrics drove or validated your design decisions etc?

It depends on a lot of things. The metrics for something new that gets launched are different from something existing that gets improved. Likewise improving say the performance in the App Store for an app has a very specific set of metrics you could look at, compared to the metrics for FMCG, or retail commerce, or longer buying cycles (like automotive) on the company’s website. I would recommend look at the industry of the places you are interviewing at, and get clued up on what metrics they might find important… so you can speak their language. I totally understand the position you are in with your existing work. You could be honest and say that’s part of why you want to switch - the. Steer conversation to the things you WOULD love to do, and also get them talking about what types of user testing they do and what metrics they vigorously care about it… but you will need to read up so you can speak their language.
