I have been with BDO since my internship and am now going to be a 2nd yr senior. I do have a lot of engagements during busy season but my season is from February through June which I think is not Typical. During that time I am on 7 audits and 1-2 reviews. For all my clients I'm drafting financials, detail reviewing staff work, performing the majority of the sampling, and testing maybe 2 to 3 FSA's and audit. I hear people that have less jobs and I hear people that have the same number of jobs... it's hard for me to compare. With that said I do think we are busier than most of the B4 year round....which is both good (stability) and bad thing (LOTS of work but what public accountant doesn't)
How big are your teams? How long are your engagements? Guy said his longest was two weeks and I cannot fathom turning an audit around that quickly
I'm not sure what this guy told you. I work in a busy office, have 2-3 busy season clients, work on teams of 2-4 people, and the absolute shortest amount of time I've ever been asked to turn an audit around in is a month. Usually longer. I'm a 3rd year senior.
BDO 2 - That sounds more in line with what I currently do. 2-4 staff...average year end is 4 weeks probably. Usually have planning and interim time as well
Busy Season Fieldwork is on average 2 weeks. I have a few that are 3, but those are very far and few between. My teams are definitely on the small side...2 staff, me, Manger and Partner. Because of the quick turnaround time and because of the small team size there are sections that I don't review such as cash or Fixed assets...for sections that I don't review I'm heavily involved in.... The manager knows that these areas are low risk and is more than willing to direct review them.
Of my 7 audits I would say most of them I have drafted financials are ready for a manager review by Wednesday of week 2....The downside is there is a lot of "pre-field work" work involved such as the obtaining the trial balance, the GL, and sampling. If I have all 3 about 3 weeks before fieldwork starts I know I will have a good audit. But I do manage expectations and let the clients as well as the manager know when we need things done by....such as PBC's. I would say from the time of fieldwork through issuance I average about a month maybe a month and a half...
BDO 1 - Appreciate it. Seemed like a comparable firm and people seemed nice. I like the current size of my clients and teams and would like to find something comparable in the market I am looking in.
Also, seems it was a lot of audits (guy said 8 in one busy season. I'm used to like 3).
Overall in my location I would say lots of audits, smaller teams, everyone knows each other and is always willing to help out. Not trying to talk to you in or out of it...just sharing my experience
