I’m in my last couple semesters of my MBA. While it has not been a requirement for my current job or my next job, it seems all director levels need to have an MBA or they are making them do an accelerated course within their first 6 months. For me I don’t have kids so trying to finish it now while I do have the free time. It won’t make me less marketable so I figured might as well. My company has tuition reimbursement so it’s a nice perk.
I don’t have one and it’s never been an issue for career growth. My husband has one and makes 1/3 of what I do. I always wanted to get mine, but kept moving up without it. No one looks at my education anymore, it’s all networking and results.
This is such a tired question and almost always from someone trying to justify not going or not getting in. It’s never someone who actually has a top MBA.
Post-MBA comp and employment have been trending up for decades, so IDK what you’re talking about.
In a world where everyone has an undergrad degree no one has an undergrad degree. Might as well get a masters.
Seems you’re taking about tech, in particular, and believe it or not there’s a huge world outside of tech. I, for one, could not be less interested.
Author - real talk though if you’re actually considering an MBA then PM me. MBAs are great for a lot of people and terrible for a ton of people. I’ll give you genuine advice.
Because an MBA is the new undergrad degree.
No, it just means that an undergrad is the new baseline instead of a high school diploma and the additional education and experience from the MBA is what’s needed now to be considered educated.
I obtained my MBA since the company that I worked for had a generous tuition reimbursement policy. I attended an evening MBA program.
I hold an MBA, which, although never a direct job requirement, is a decision I do not regret. It provided me with valuable knowledge and gives me an edge in the job market.
Go top tier or don't bother, unfortunately

Get someone else to pay for it. But also examine if your industry actually rewards having one. It doesn’t matter if you’re a SWE for instance. Can help you pivot to a consulting role. One of the benefits is typically recruitment out of those programs by certain companies - sometimes there is no other pathway to get into those jobs (or just way more difficult) - which isn’t to say mba is some great knowledge just that the pipeline is set up through the school recruiting.
On a macro level, it will likely help your comp growth long term. But if you’re forking out 150k and don’t get one of those 150k+ jobs right after, it’s arduous to climb “ahead”.
My company would pay almost half but I still can’t justify what I would be paying for vs what I would receive.
Not a SWE, but finance/data analytics at a fortune10. The learning/development I think is similar and may be why I have some of the thoughts I do.
An MBA wasn’t worth it for me when I was looking into them over a decade ago.
My reasons to getting an MBA-
1. Company sponsored
2. Learning - Yes I can learn the materials online but I know I won’t unless I was held accountable
3. Resume booster - All else equal, you’re perceived higher value with MBA vs undergrad alone
4. Continuous improvement - I rather spend my time getting an MBA then wasting free time on useless things. Hopefully snowballs into better things
My MBA will be from non-target so I don’t expect too much benefit from networking but has some potential. But given my reasons above, it makes sense for me.
SA1 - I do have some questions and would like some advice on when I should do an MBA, but I’m rather new to the app and am not sure how to connect/DM people here?
