I love the product I sell and the impact it has to my customers. To me, it’s like tech consulting on steroids as a sales engineer
It's like a game! A fun game that gives those great feelings of accomplishment when I win a new customer and they are happy! Also, a tough competitive environment that has it's ups and downs but is never dull or boring. As well as the huge upside potential for leveling up and freedom it can provide!
I agree, it is a game!
I like the competitive energy behind sales! A lot of roles that are "designed for women" do not particularly encourage a personal competitive spirit.
I control how my own schedule and how much money I make. I like to work with different people every day doing different projects. It is fast-paced and relationship based.
The relationship aspect of sales is so awesome!
It comes down to helping people solve their problems. Whatever your product is, the ideal client needs it. Figure out the issue, solve it, support them, be the hero.
To me - it’s just high paying customer service.
Very true!
Sales, in its simplest form, is the art of conversation and the best thing about it is that if you can hold a conversation, it doesn’t matter what kind of background you come from, you can do well in sales. I’ve worked with people who have nothing but a GED soar past people with masters degrees on the leaderboards.
Theres other jobs/industries that make more but you will never get the same level gratification/accomplishment as one does while earning their money through sales.
WFH
I like the social aspect of sales and being able to work as a team.
What vertical are you selling in?
As someone who’s been in sales and management and then back to sales for me it’s the high you get from closing big deals.
Agreed. Curious, what do you sell for a cruise line?
Pro
Direct correlation between competence & compensation.
Honestly, because I lack educational qualification. I entered the industry having only a high school diploma. I can't get into any other job because I am always short of qualifications.
Yeah I got into sales the same way. Eventually went back to school for the degree and so that I can move up in the world but yeah, if you can sell, no degree needed for many jobs.
It’s the closest thing to being a consultant without having to gain a high-end degree and battle for a position at a large consulting firm. If you’re good, you make really good money, and there is nothing better than closing the deal when both sides feel mutually excited about moving forward.
I’ve been in sales over a decade and I’m honestly burned out and trying to figure out if I want to stay in it, but when I was new to it I absolutely loved that rush I got from selling and I’ve always been super competitive. After this long, I don’t really have that anymore, but the money and lifestyle/flexibility has kept me going to where I don’t really know what else I could see myself doing it. All of my passions pay like 1/5 of what I make in sales. I love the lifestyle I can afford for myself so it’s probably worth continuing sales, especially since I’m good at it.
Keep searching for the right product/service and environment that helps motivate you. It can be a long journey, but when you find it it won’t be perfect, but will be better.
If you get good at you can live real good on 20-30hrs per week MAXIMUM.
1st - Money…yea, mostly the money.
2nd - I get to work with a VERY wide variety of industry segments (~10) & a ton of cool clients I don’t think I’d get the opportunity to work with otherwise, keeps it interesting.
