Skill-wise, how far is a typical 5th year from a 7th/8th year who is ready for partnership? I’m a fifth year with generally positive reviews, but I feel like there’s still so much I don’t know how to do, or where I need to ask questions to the partner/senior associates. Does something click in year 7/8 where you “get it” and can suddenly run all aspects of cases yourself? I want to be a partner but am worried about developing the necessary skills in time.

You still 3.5 years to go, try to picture how much you knew at the beginning of your 2nd year. You’ll learn equally as much. Maybe more because you’re spending less time doing diligence and signature pages.

Currently a Wealth Advisor for Citi but I honestly hate it here with a passion it’s the worst company I’ve ever worked for in my life and I’ve been in Wealth Management in the banking channel for over a decade. Series 7, Series 63, Life, CFP, ChFC, and soon to have my MBA with a focus in Mergers & Acquisitions. I’m look to enter another area of Finance at this point instead of starting over somewhere else from scratch, but not sure what direction to go. Interested in Investment Banking or M&A.

I was recently offered a Zoom interview. The school had 10 interview slots for me to choose from. Three were one day this week and the rest are next week. I chose the first time slot available. Should I have waited until one of the last slots so I was fresher on their mind when choosing a candidate? I am just sitting here stressing out until I here something. Also, do interviewers still appreciate a hand written thank you for the interview?

Hello! I’m a Talent Acquisition Manager at a 300 FTE sized gov contractor with 2 recruiters under me. One of my recruiters and I are both having babies in August and will be out for 12 weeks. She’s only coming back part time. My leadership already said no to hiring another full time recruiter. Has anyone had any good experience with contract recruiters? Or any advice for a short term solution?

How to move things along with forgetful partners? I am a new 1st year and I am staffed with a partner who is swamped. They are great but otherwise very busy and occasionally forgetful (meetings with other partners or associates, assignments to review, responding to others). Is there a way to appropriately remind them of things without being an irritating junior?

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.
