I worked for a small ad agency and loved it. Everyone knew each other and hung out, no big boss corporate pressure, good times. Although I did have to work a few more weekend days than I was used to, because being small meant we didn't have as much power to say no to big clients.
I work at a big ad agency now and yeah, it's as you describe. Lots of complaints about the C-suite being out of touch with creatives' needs. The culture and structure come from the bottom up, and something's of course wrong with that. Maybe it's just the company I work for. Too big to care about us workers down the food chain. But we have a nice office, good benefits, and client work that can put your portfolio in the big leagues. Pros and cons, but I prefer the vibe of the smaller agency.
Current work for holding co. Have working at an agency of 20 people, and an agency of 3 people. They all have pros and cons.
I thought a larger company would have better process and less stress. Was wrong there.
Small shops can be fun, and you do get rewarded for your efforts, but you can also get burned with no recourse (5 years on and still not received last pay cheque).
It’s more about the leader/CCO I think. Have been at some really toxic small design shops where the owner is a dictator and micro manages everything and also global networks where there’s more layers but my CCO/ECD was so nice.
