I worked for IBM for 7 years. Forced to work 60 hours a week and only pidd my contract 38 hours. Thought I was doing the right thing. My parents both got sick and eventually passed away. Immediately iBM found out I was needing time off I was told good by over the phone. The termination notice had to be hand delivered but it was emailed to me.
There organisations do not care about their employees. You are w cost to them. After my parents died I tried to get back into the the work scene but told I was over 55 anne had no possibility.
I had worked my whole life for these type of selfish companies..
I'm so sorry this happened to you but it's not you. It's their selfish $$$ calculator as you are a cost not a benefit
Whomever told you there's no possibility of getting "back into the work scene" after 55 is complete BS. I know several people, including myself, that have gotten new positions well after 55. If you have the necessary skills and experience for the position, you're still a strong candidate after that age.
Sorry to hear that. I’ve been thru that myself. In the end, you realize that all the corporate cheerleading, and talk about “teamwork” is feel-good bullsh!t. It’s all about the money. Tell them want they want to hear, and take them
for all you can. NEVER sacrifice your family time, or put yourself into a compromising position for ANY job.
It's very unfortunate to experience this especially now during the holidays. Is it a lie yes and no. The lie is believing in one company to recognize/reward your hard work for a lasting career. Truth most companies are about the bottom line. Silver lining you've leveled up your knowledge and experience for the next opportunity. It may seem dim but landing back on your feet is highly possible and with a salary bump.
If you look at the whole sweep of consultancies there is a race to the bottom on cost cutting. If you are in the UK a lot is driven by the skills visa bonanza and the resulting job market saturation making existing employees look expensive and ripe for fire and rehire.
When an organization doesn't show appreciation and doesn't provide a strong reason for letting someone go, they are only concerned with profit, not people. Count it a blessing and find a career with an organization that has a healthy culture and appreciates their people.
Are you the only one being furloughed? Or is this more of a set of RIFs? If the former perhaps take the time to assess yourself and retool if necessary. If the latter there could be multiple reasons, in which case you have a set of marketable skills, and speaking as an employer, it is getting more and more difficult to find A level talent. A level is job dependent not necessarily a personal trait, Find the right match and it off to the races again.
I empathize. Happened to me too after 10 great years. Meeting on 11/30 - told last day would be 12/1. Merry Christmas and better luck next year.
I'm sorry this happened to you. Companies want to get 'excess staff' off their books by mid December so they can boost their numbers for the financial markets.
Don't take it personally, these are all cost cutting moves.
Sorry to hear about what happened to you. To answer your question, in my opinion, I would 200% say, yes, it is all a lie. I have been the Head of Marketing at various tech companies, reporting directly to CEOs, for almost a decade. I work 80 hours a week because marketing teams at most B2B tech startups are tiny and expected to wear multiple hats. I have also been sexually harassed multiple times throughout my career. Like you, it doesn't matter how hard I grind, I get let go without any explanation. I am never going to give so much to an employer ever again. If an employer wants one-sided, blind loyalty at their mercy, they can go get a dog instead.
I was at exactly same boat with PwC last year. Landed my dream job this year, dream team, lower pay but I am just thrilled to be here. Best of luck.
Unfortunately this is how it is done. I just experienced the same thing. Try not to take it personally, it is just business to them, While to us it is our life and thus it hurts because we know all of the sacrifices we have made to the company and how hard we have worked to get things done to meet deadlines or expectations. The market is hard right now because of the election and year-end. So my advice is to take some time off to digest what has happened and start networking and building up your connections on LinkedIn. Work on updating your resume and Hopefully you will find something in the new year. Best of Luck
I hate to be hard, but I learned from a manager who expects one to know the business even though one has a successful effort or project. He gave me advice for one to answer three questions: 1. What are you doing?; 2. Why?; and 3. What is the benefit to the business or organization? When one internalize these questions, match their effort or project to support the business or organization, and articulate the questions to your immediate manager, and ones at one or more levels, one should do well. Sometimes, the efforts in the existing role might not match the organization, if changes occur, one should adjust, or look for an opportunity outside before they ask you to leave. For the later, I have made decision to look outside before being asked, where each change for a total of 2, was better off over a 35 years without missing a pay check. Now, I am retired.
This can only be a joke!
I'm so very sorry, I understand you completely! It happened the same to me before when I worked for a Big Corporation.
Hope you are well! and please get in touch if yu need a chat!
I work in Michigan as a salaried engineer/manager in the automotive industry. It happens all the time. We are all just a number. Typically, I am let go just before the holidays or before April 1.
I was promised to be converted to full time but they kept putting me off. They wanted me to train my replacement, back up, but instead I kept putting in spaghetti code to make it harder to replace me. They let me go with no notice and a PM kept calling me to see if I would be nice enough to help the poor schmuck that they put in to replace me, for free. I said I would help if they would hire me back full time. Instead they kept looking for someone else, and at some point I no longer heard anything more about them
I think letting people go around the holidays is the worse time. But unfortunately I have been through company lay offs, company law suits, the 2007 real estate market crash, I've been through it all. And just recently laid off 8 months because of company re structing. Company’s are definitely the tightening the belt and letting people. Take this time to think about other careers or opportunities that u might want to get into. Unemployment offers free grant training program through the WOIA Workman Enforcement Act program. They will given u free money to take training classes on online to help u get back into the market. I am in the program and have taken my network + and cyber security + class through the program. I would definitely look into it when u sign up for unemployment.
Keep your head up
God bless
People with over 30 years had that happen at Cargill just last week. Unfortunately, that is the world we live in. Take care of yourself first!
Welcome to the world of consulting.
Sorry to hear this has happened to you. Unfortunately, most companies care only about their bottom line and not so much the employees. A company will dispose of an employee the moment a better alternate comes their way.
I hope you are kind to yourself & your family. I also hope that you are always prepared for the worst (i.e.: keep emergency savings, investments, etc.). The global economy is slowing down, so buckle up.
A classic Mr. Scrooge move...
Hope, you were given, good package as you worked with them that long.
They did that at my corporation aswell right before holidays. The whole team is gonne.
