I worked for IBM for 7 years. Forced to work 60 hours a week and only pidd my contract 38 hours. Thought I was doing the right thing. My parents both got sick and eventually passed away. Immediately iBM found out I was needing time off I was told good by over the phone. The termination notice had to be hand delivered but it was emailed to me.
There organisations do not care about their employees. You are w cost to them. After my parents died I tried to get back into the the work scene but told I was over 55 anne had no possibility.
I had worked my whole life for these type of selfish companies..
I'm so sorry this happened to you but it's not you. It's their selfish $$$ calculator as you are a cost not a benefit
Whomever told you there's no possibility of getting "back into the work scene" after 55 is complete BS. I know several people, including myself, that have gotten new positions well after 55. If you have the necessary skills and experience for the position, you're still a strong candidate after that age.
Sorry to hear that. I’ve been thru that myself. In the end, you realize that all the corporate cheerleading, and talk about “teamwork” is feel-good bullsh!t. It’s all about the money. Tell them want they want to hear, and take them
for all you can. NEVER sacrifice your family time, or put yourself into a compromising position for ANY job.
Big business will chew you up and spit you out.
i had similar experience after being with company for 11 years....they were leveraging AI and outsourcing overseas which eliminated USA higher paid positions.
Employers used to care a long long time ago....
Hope they gave you good severance package as you worked there for a while?
Same just happened with me, so you're in good company. We definitely did not have enough work to sustain the program, but ultimately it seemed political as well.
I was working in an environment where kissing unfortunate areas stood you in good stead much more effectively than being good at the job. I don't play the game well, it would seem.
They let me go after 17 years in May. I didn't conduct any job search at the time, and now I find that interviews are a different ball game these days. During my tenure at Deloitte, I worked on many complex and large projects, but now I am struggling to find a suitable position and navigate the interview process.
It is not a lie. I've been doing contract work since 2005. Around 13 now I think. I had one contract job at a company I spent my career at, I knew all the client managers for decades. I even was doing a lot of overtime because they laid so many contractors off that they became shorthanded, so I was working around 15-18 hour days for several months, not completely dedicated as I was hoarding that overtime money. But even the 2nd level says in a meeting. I know who is dedicated to the job and who is not as he is staring at me by how many hours someone is doing. One day I get a phone call from the contract company at 4pm, they thought I was working 8-5, lol....it was more like Noon to 5am. But he says just calling to advise you at the end of your shift your contract is over. Basically he was given me 1 hour notice. I thought who was the SOB manager in this office that did that to me? He goes on to say so make su4e you have everything when you leave in an hour. I said, an hour? He says yes the end of your shift. I said the end of my normal scheduled shift is a actually 8pm, not 5. Told him I had been doing Noon to 8pm for the past year, and doing overtime until around 5am for the last 4 months, he says oh we didn't know that, ok this might be a problem. I said how do? He said well the client said they wanted contractors to end their shifts we have it here as 5pm. I said if you are worried that I will become violent or something I won't. So I worked out the rest of my shift, in a very lacking state, I didn't care if the work got done or not.
Unfortunately, ending contracts in December is a normal thing. Companies want to reduce their headcount, and expenses for tax reasons, so yes it's the needs of the business...
This reflects a concerning lack of emotional intelligence on the part of those responsible for the decision to let you go. In Australia, employers are legally required to provide at least four weeks' notice, which can either be worked out or paid in lieu, depending on what best suits the company. It's hard to see why anyone would fully commit to a business that demonstrates such a blatant disregard for loyalty towards its staff.
Of course it's all a lie. Every company is always looking to maximize profits. Most do a year end review. The timing stinks, but it is what it is.
To think that any company has any loyalty to it's employees is fantasy. Maybe some small mom-and-pop outfits, but that's about it.
Dust off the resume and get back out there. Good luck.
Capitalism has failed and will fail.
There is a threshold in tech (really any industry) where if you have not passed it you are considered disposable, no matter what you do for the company or your knowledge and skills.
I have the same experience from different company, worked for 8 years till last year all good goo review.. all of a sudden the so called Manager started picking and putting all the blames on me for the team work and i was told the same..
The best time to look for a job is when you have one. I've nevwr had a job more than 2 years.
Sorry to hear that. Typical also at Motorola Soltions at this time of the year. Don’t take it personal and just prove them wrong. Showcase your value on Linkedin and use this energy that way. Just go for it!
Don't worry, be happy. seriously
The same thing happened to me in September. I worked at their request until the end of October. Trying to find another position in this climate is tough. I wish you the best, and good luck with your search.
This is how companies do. I had the same thing happen to me by a very large healthcare company. They do this right at end of the year so that the bottom line numbers look better than they would had they kept your job. It's all about MONEY period. They never can make enough and they can never be rich enough.
Also was laid off from Deloitte unexpectedly in 2018. I’m sorry you’re going through this! I hope your severance package can hold you over while you find your new employer!
Not a lie- but misinterpreted often. They provide a path for growth- but don’t guarantee. I know from personal experience that it is about impossible not to take it personally- but work on not taking it personally and start looking at all the kinds of jobs and companies out there that you could help. That universe is far bigger than you think - but, right now is hard to see since Deloitte has been dominating your world view for so long. Take the holidays, do nothing, don’t reach out to people frantically. Enjoy the time, work on that not taking it personally and read lots of job listjngs to start to expand your horizons before hitting the search in 2025
Same experience w/ that organisation. Sorry for your experience but sadly not surprised. A partner told me unofficially that Deloitte understand and believe that there are a certain (small) % of people who would make it to partner. All the rest will exit at some point. It's just a matter of when. The whole "find your place on the green dot" is just internal marketing.
On the positive side, it will work out for you. You'll find somewhere you can grow and are valued, not just another piece of grist for the mill
Sorry to hear this kind of news. I think, we should get appetite with this kind of incidents. Saying with the recent experience of mine. Stay strong.
