So, I just graduated with an LLM preparing for the bar. I have no idea what area of law I want to practice. I have been a paralegal for a decade now and I’ve worked in BK, civil rights, family law appellate practice, and now contracts. I’m interested in IP, corporate governance/compliance, contracts, and securities regulation. Did some IP and securities courses during my LLM but no hands-on experience. Any advice?

I give this advice to every kid considering law: Don't do it until you have a sense of what kind of law you'd like to do, because law isn't 1 job, it's 100s. Sound like you'll need to go through the same soul searching as any undergad would have to do when choosing a career path. Network, talk to folks who do different things, think about what you would do in a good day at work.

Is there a young lawyers association in your city/locale? Highly recommend trying to go to an in person event or two (CLE or not) on the types of law you think you might want to do. A. An opportunity to meet some people who are probably working on matters closer to what you’d be doing as a new lawyer, and B. You may get a good practical insight into what that job looks like from the presenter or those people you meet.
Young lawyer groups are supposed to help people find what they’d like to do, educate, serve and also provide a sense of community.
Getting a job as an LLM will almost always be harder than as a straight JD-summer associate-associate path, but you need to be super intentional as you job hunt and possibly hop between roles until you land where you want to be

This is very helpful. Thanks a lot. I’ve an alumni community that hosts events here and there. It may be a good starting point. I didn’t think of that.

Hi! Do you mind connecting? I’m looking to do a postgrad LLB and go to an American LLM after as I live here. I just need the flexibility. Any insight you provide would be so appreciated!

Hey, sure. DM me and we can connect.

Join LinkedIn and connect with other attorneys. Read their posts and ask questions about the type of law they practice.

Hi everyone,

I appeared in L2 round of Capgemini recently.
Just after the intro first question they asked me " Do you have any offer and amount?" This question was asked in technical round.
I'm sure that guy wasn't a Manager.

I don't think he know how to take an interview.

Even after creating 2 asked program and answering 80% of their questions correctly.
Got rejected.
Didn't expect this kind of L2 round from Capgemini.

How do firms calculate how much parental leave to provide, either paid or unpaid. Or do they just pick a number, like “yeah they can get to know their kid in a few weeks and I couldn’t possibly have that attorney out for 12 weeks?” I’m at a small firm, no FMLA or state requirement. We get four weeks paid and four weeks unpaid. Would like to push for more but not sure how to argue costs side of it.

Seems kind of ridiculous for a business to want to waste so much time to find out after a handful of interviews that the pay isnt aligned with my needs ......
