Somebody asked elsewhere about how they feel when less-senior staff leave. If they're going to someplace where they can learn different and/or expanded skills, I'm happy for them. My job as a manager is to help people grow at the same time as we accomplish organizational goals. I am still connected with people I reported to, and others who reported to me, decades after our work connection ended, thanks to this philosophy.

I completely agree with this. If their role with us was not helping them grow in the direction they needed to it's no hard feelings at all. What does harboring a resentment do for me? It's just soul poison to wish ill upon someone for not being "loyal" enough to us. It's all good as far as I'm concerned. And yeah, I like retaining those relationships.

I love this. I literally told someone on my team today that I’d be a reference for her if she felt like she was hitting a dead end at our company because of our leaders’ poor decision making. I’d hate for her to go, but I want her to succeed even if it’s somewhere else.

I'm getting my brother autographed Panthers memorabilia for christmas, but I'm the gay son in the family who knows nothing about football... So we've got someone named D.J. None of these names are doing anything for me, nor do any of the stats mean anything to me when I look up their names on Google. Do any of these names ring a bell to you, and which ones would be the coolest for a signed helmet/jersey?

Heading into 2023, here are some phrases I'm eliminating:

1. "No worries."
2. "No problem."
3. "Sorry to bother you."
4. "Does this make sense?"
5. "Sorry, I'll fix that right now."

Here's what I'm replacing them with: ⤵
1. My pleasure.
2. Of course, happy to help.
3. When you have a minute, can I get your opinion on ____?
4. Does this help you clarify things?
5. Thank you for catching that!

Words are powerful.

Use it wisely.

Authentic Leadership - what does this mean to you?

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

My remit quadrupled+ in a recent re-org with no increase in pay/promotion, my new director is new to the company and was zero help, and I was passed over for recent promotion during the comp cycle. The new director essentially began shutting me down any time I ask for clarity in my career progression. Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?

I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. In addition, my director said I will be receiving 'deep delegation' from them. I don't mind more work, but deep delegation is a new term I've never heard. What does that mean lol?
