Op, can you elaborate? You do get both the star points you earn from your (assumed) platinum status and from the credit card (once you pay off the balance). Is this not worth it to you?
Yes was quoting figures for lux card. No reason to have the regular one. Lux is $150 net fee, only $55 more than regular. Free night is worth $150 more with lux card. Dominant strategy
You get Marriott points. 6x spend (~4.5% @ $0.075/pt) plus your regular hotel points that you'd also get if you used the CSR
You get the SPG/Marriott points from the SPG Amex and the points from the stay itself as well
Oh so then the SPG amex card doesn’t add any value!
I mean I had CSR earlier and just got the SPG amex. If I didn’t get the amex, I’d be getting starpoints and 4.5% on CSR (including the 1.5X via chase portal) Vs. getting the 4.5% and starpoints now with SPG amex. So I don’t really gain anything from the SPG amex over just CSR?
OP, the only difference between using the SPG Amex and the CSR is the points you get on the credit card spend. With both of them you will still get the points from the stay itself. So it depends on whether you value getting 6 Marriott/SPG points (using the SPG Amex) or 3 CSR points more (using the CSR). That is the difference between the two.
On an unrelated note - you'll usually get better value from your CSR points by transferring them to a transfer partner such as Hyatt or United rather than redeeming through the travel portal
So just to be 100% clear:
-With the CSR, you'll get 3x CSR points on the dollars spent plus Marriott/Starpoints for the stay itself
-With the SPG Amex, you'll get 6x Marriott/Starpoints on the dollars spents plus Marriott/Starpoints for the stay itself
Conservative valuation of Marriott points is 1cpp (can be much higher at award properties), so you’re getting 6% vs 4.5% with CSR. Even if that valuation was a wash, there is value in having 2 piles of currency with different travel partners. I’d rather 500k each than 1M Chase points. You also the free night, free elite nights, another Global entry reimbursement, another priority pass (useful for the tab allowance locations), etc
Makes sense. Though don’t think the non luxury SPG amex has global entry or priority pass.
TPG (a Chase shill) has MR points at 0.9 cents, Chase UR at 2.0.
NerdWallet valuates MR points at 1 cent (I think their methodology is suspect).
Over on OneMileAtATime, MR points are valued at 0.8 cents for 2018 and 0.9 cents for 2019. Read why here:
