4PQE. UK. Have been offered a job at another firm but they've only agreed to match my salary. I went back asking for more and have been sternly told that's not possible as I'm already being offered more than what their bandings allow.

The new firm seems like it would be better for the sector I'm specialising in but anyone else I hear that moves tends to get a considerable payrise! I feel reluctant to move if I'm not getting a big pay jump... Is moving for the same pay a done thing?

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) 3rd year associate. Former fed law clerk. Working at ID firm. Doing slip and falls and wrecks. Recently received big law offer to do products. Really want to go. Gave notice to current firm. Current firm really wants me to stay, counters that it will try to get me salary as close to big law offer and give me complex work. Stay at ID firm or accept big law offer?

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Depending on how many people are there and how it feels, I was planning to stay an hour extra but should I hang around the office until later? First time visiting this city so it’d be great to take in some sights too (although that’s not a priority of course).

Anyone else basically become comatose on either Saturday or Sunday when you get a weekend without work? I have all of these things I’d love to do, but as soon as my brain understands that I don’t have to work, it’s like I completely lose all energy. It’s making me feel bad about myself. Any tips?

Should I complain to a firm's HR if the interviewers laughed at my answer during an interview? Maybe it sounded scripted but it was still heartfelt and genuine: my immigration story and how that made me appreciate the rule of law. I said it soo many times during OCI's that maybe it eventually sounded robotic, but for the interviewers to laugh and one to say sarcastically "nice elevator pitch", I thought was rude. Thoughts?

A friend was told their firm will cut ties EOY if certain things don’t improve. Friend had planned to quit in the next year anyway (to start their own business), so there is no real incentive to bend over backwards. Friend’s goal is to keep the income for a little longer, but to minimize conflict / headaches. What’s the best move here? Wait until EOY and take the severance? Give 6 / 9 / 12 months’ notice now? Is there such a thing as too much notice? Could too much notice backfire?

There is a partner that, without fail, calls on Fridays after 6pm anytime I am staffed with him. It’s extremely frustrating since his calls are usually non-urgent and I make it a point to check in early in the day to address anything. Any advice?
