Do you submit time by location each day? If not no one is gonna know. If yes, legally you need to put the right time and for a month yes every one of those states will want you to submit tax returns. Illegally you could make the decision you’re paying New York enough money and bill your time to New York. Odds of a state tax department identifying this and pursuing you for it are pretty low imo.
So that means your taxes will basically have to be done in NYC
Be upfront with your employer about the situation as they need to register for each state an employee works in for appropriate taxing. They also should be able to give insight into it if there is a set number of days which then would require them to submit and therefore inform your tax situation!
It doesn’t matter if it is consulting or not - this is about how your company is submitting employee records/taxes as your employer has to comply with every state regulations they have employees in. And yes you will likely need to file multiple state tax forms, if this was me I’d discuss the plan with my company to confirm and get approval, and I’d get a cpa who can help with all the taxes regulations to make sure you are in line.
Go talk to a tax advisor. I recall hearing in orientation of a consultant doing something similar, with no official home address. Got into tax problems. Get a home location in FL or TX, or some state without state income tax. nY is the worst and likely you’d get flagged.
I’m mostly digging your itinerary. How did you choose these states, will you live in one place for the month or hop around? Sign me up!
Flagging that a lot of employers don’t allow you to work from out of state for longer than a certain period of time for this very reason (my company only allows 4 weeks per year worked out of home state and I’m a hybrid employee meaning part remote part in office)

New York charges tax for work from home employees if the company is based in New York and the company doesn’t have a presence in the state where the worker resides. Those states are also going to charge tax because you resides in the state when you worked. You should talk to a NY a state tax expert.
Dude this is so overly complicated, just file in the state you have your ID with, if it’s NY, then do NY and that’s it. Who cares if you’re traveling while working, all that matters is your have a perm address in NY.

You are right. In most cases when you cheat on your taxes no one notices.
It’s not the complicated to file multiple state returns - but you need a tax person to do it for you as tax rules by state vary. Some states have reciprocity, some won’t charge you, some will take some of the money and reduce your home state etc etc. literally just track you work days by state and find a good tax person. This isn’t complicated and you can do it by the books and be legit rather than be shady like some folks are advising.
