I understand how you are feeling OP as I have felt this way many times over the course of my career. The best way to beat the imposter syndrome is to go for it. I learned not to take rejection personal and just kept trying until I landed my next role. You have got this.
I made the switch to brand side after almost 15 years in account. I’ve worked in advertising, brand marketing, account for an in-house agency and now in CRM/digital marketing for the last 8 years. There are definitely a lot of folks looking to make the switch bc agency life can be a grind. I would say it can be tough to move to the marketing side if you’ve only had account experience. While the relationship building skills are important, marketing roles require a holistic understanding of how companies operate and make money and the levers to enable growth. It is key to understand measurement and analytics to show how your efforts are driving that growth.
Some larger companies have “account” roles at their in-house agencies but my experience is that it is more of a PM type role, or at least a relationship maintenance role. In my IHA account role I maintained the relationships with the brand folks on my assigned brands, primarily executing email and web campaigns while they outsourced the brand and advertising work to external agencies. We would manage annual scoped hours and flag overages/underages for addl work we could do each year. Ultimately it wasn’t super satisfying to me…I didn’t really want to do account anymore, but I’m happier in a role now where I use my ideas to help drive growth for the LOB that I work on at my current company.
Yes, feel free! Happy to connect and share thoughts.
There are “business leads” as some big organizations, otherwise I think you’re looking at roles with brand marketing in the title. This kinda question comes up every month or two in this bowl like clockwork so I’d recommend mining what’s already been shared on the topic as well
Ah thank you, I will search. Are that many of us considering making the leap?!
