I know it’s just one word from your post, but it’s a loaded one. Raises are not “earned” or “deserved”, they’re negotiated. Unfortunately, those two concepts don’t give you any leverage because they are based on what you’ve already done. Companies only care about what you WILL do. They will give you a raise if they need you to do something and they believe you won’t do it without a raise. For instance, if they need you to cover for someone. If they really need YOU, then you have some leverage.
You don’t need to threaten to leave to get a raise. But you do need to know what’s important to you. You wrote above that you “weren’t willing to walk away”. So, actually, you got what you wanted. There was something about your current situation that you valued more than the extra money. The first step in a negotiation is to know what you want. It’s worth reading a few books on the subject.
