MBB is not stable. They are in the business of cutting workforce every year, rain or shine.
Startups will give you superior experience. MBB will get you traditional consulting track and possible shot at partnership. Do what interests you, which appears to be start up
For the love of God please dont return to mbb. Especially now. That is the saddest thing to just go back to consulting with all of the innovation happening right now.
Consulting isn't the high leverage thing it used to be.
Its the comfort zone thing now.
This is an environment of opportunity. It does not offer you capital upfront. Consulting is that capital upfront offer. And it doesnt have the same reward it used to have.
Did mbb sponsor your MBA? Be sure to factor in paying back 200k or however much money vs working for mbb for a while longer.
The way you framed this, I think your heart’s at the start up
Unpopular opinion but as a guy who did 10y industry roles and 10y mck and VC, I would always reco McK vs any startup. You get exposure that is essential in senior business roles, you open various paths ahead of you and then if you want to join a start up you go at senior level. I’m now a Partner in a MMPE and not a single soul in my network would reco to go for start up instead of MBB. FB is full of people that would tell you otherwise, but a lot comes from an emotional, not rational place.
Go to the startup
I’m in a similar boat— have offer to join MBB from boutique firm, or join innovative startup in clean energy…. Is it worth doing 2-3 years MBB to get that credential/experience, before jumping to a startup? Or just go for it now if the right opportunity arises?
