Work with another recruiter. Sounds like she wants you to sell yourself short because that is advantageous to her -- if you settle for a less than a desirable gig, sucks for you but shortens her timeline for payout.
For context, first time lateraling and submitted through her because I had mistakenly thought this was an exclusive search. Also I’m not looking to retool, thought a bit shift in deal mix (e.g. from a more heavy underwriter cap markets to more issuer heavy or the like).
Coach
Recruiters never have exclusive searches for associates. At most they may get a week or two heads up before a search goes live but generally this is fake news and the recruiter is not trustworthy

She works for the firms who pay her, not you. And she wants to close the deal and get paid. Having you ready to take anything makes it easier for her to do that.
Coach
Probably a good idea to meet with other firms for leverage. No idea why she would be so adamant about this without context but always best to grab as much leverage as possible going into offer discussions
I’ve already submitted via her and had two interviews with this firm, it is somewhere I’m interested. Obviously I’m not using her for other firms but guess I’m stuck with her for this??
Coach
Yeah, unfortunately, unless she did something unethical.
How senior are you?
This is odd. Usually a recruiter should push for the highest base comp for you as possible (which is usually tied to year) because they get paid based on your base. If this is a very small boutique or a firm that said “no matter how senior someone is, we have at least X years wait & cannot class someone above a 6th year”, I can see what’s happening. But if you’re an average midlevel this seems odd.
The one thing I’ll note—if you are an 8th year, a class cut is not abnormal as firms want the time to consider you for partnership.
Thanks all. I’m a mid level so it’s not even about partnership window. It sickens me that if I actually do get an offer and take it, she stands to profit from it, despite the way she treated me. Wish I’d known better. For offer discussions like start date, signing bonus etc, do I need to go through her or can I do it on my own? I’m not sure she has my best interest versus just short selling me to close the deal. I’m lining up other firms interview as leverage as well.
Coach
She may be correct in terms of expectations, but that doesn't mean you can't leverage other firms to change it.
Something similar happened to me. I was working with a recruiter who totally underestimated my skillset and what I brought to the table. In one instance he scolded me for replying to a hiring partner saying I was only interested in my specific speciality practice area because they were hiring for the more general lit group and now I had likely lost my chances with this firm (per him). He then had to come back and tell me the specific practice group leaders wanted to meet with me and interview me (and gave me an offer) because duh that’s where my speciality was. Don’t let them question your abilities. I ended up going to a different firm but I’d never work with this guy (or honestly any recruiter) again. It was clear his best interest was to place me at that firm no matter the cost or fit and that clearly wasn’t my goal.
