Teaching Art for going on 11-12 years now. I feel my College Art Ed. And Edu classes did very little to have me ready. Anyone else?

Most valuable was observation of art teachers. Not really the classes. Back then I was judgmental but now I understand. Now I know why the 9th grade art teacher did not hand out “real” drawing pencils to her class (they break them) and the another art teacher ignored the kid on the headphones and taught the kids who wanted to see the demo (spend your time and effort wisely). I understand why the art teacher who shared the room with the music teacher and had no sink in his room refused to do painting and messy proects. I wonder too why I work myself to death and not follow his example of being efficient with what you have.

Haha! I agree... I learned a lot of theory that doesn't apply in a real life setting. I think that 4 year degree was stretched out, the information I learned could have been condensed into 2 years, but universities gotta make their $$ I guess.

My BFA and MFA were probably overkill but the did help me to understand what it means to work as an artist, and informed my teaching. I think BFA should be a requirement for art teaching.
Art education classes not so valuable.

Hmmm.... Nothing beats personal experience but I still utilize most of what I was taught.

I agree; I just knew I had to jump through those hoops to be hired. In art ed classes, mainly project ideas and a few new techniques were helpful. The real clinchers like time management, motivators, and administrative pressures weren't addressed. Also, I thought much of the curriculum suggestions were trivial or irrelevant. The general education classes were more about obvious things, or more theory than "real world".

I agree that college did little to teach you how to teach but some things are fundamental and you need to learn them such as: the how not to be a racist (don't remember the real title of the course but it was informative) and measurement and assessment. I feel like behavior management strategies should also be included probably but wasn't required so I never took it.

Typed all this up and realized you probably meant all the art courses, yeah mostly useless as far as informing my teaching goes.

The art room that I teach in is vastly changing from year to year. The only constant in art is change. It’s completely impossible for any college to prepare you for constant change.

Honestly I feel like college does very little to prepare for teaching. I think shadowing and student teaching were the most helpful.

I finally was able to convince my principal that we need a consistent math intervention at the MS level (grades 5-8). (Right now, we are just "doing our own thing," which isn't helping students progress much.) Does anyone have any suggestions? It would be beneficial to have some sort of progress monitoring tool as part of the program, if possible. Our classes run roughly 55 minutes (which is too long for an intervention, in my humble opinion).

Thanks for any advice.

My school deliberately cut the number of classes that the specials teachers teach so that we could be building subs for quarantined and sick teachers (we are hybrid). So... I teach fewer classes (which is a relief because specials teachers teach way more classes than core teachers normally) but I'm pulled for most of my planning periods to babysit classes. I need my planning periods so I can redo my ENTIRE curriculum... and I just feel unappreciated, used, and nothing more than a babysitter.

It only took me 7 years to figure this system out.... posting in case it helps anyone else! I color coded my classes and printed off numbers according to the number of kids in my classes. I then assign each kid a number that corresponds with my gradebook. When they turn in their projects, they put their number with it. This way, no contact and I can easily see who has and hasn't turned in their projects yet. I take the list down once they remember their number.
