My Google PM Interview Did not go as how I expected - Here is why I got the Job Anyway

The day of my Google PM interview, I felt surprisingly calm—not because I wasn’t nervous, but because I knew I'd invested enough into prep and didn't take it lightly. Google interviews are notoriously tough, and the idea of facing those challenging product questions had kept me up more than a few nights.

But I had a plan: practice, clarity, and storytelling.

The first round started with a classic product sense question: "How would you improve Google Maps?" Instead of rushing into features, I calmly asked clarifying questions, structured my thoughts, and walked the interviewer through a clear user journey. It became less of an interrogation and more of a collaborative discussion.

The metrics round tested my analytical side. The key? Staying structured and conversational. I defined clear goals, outlined metrics, and explained my reasoning each step of the way. I didn’t get everything perfect—but I communicated my thought process clearly.

For behavioral questions, I drew from real, relatable stories about failures, learnings, and wins. Instead of polished perfection, I went for authenticity, clearly highlighting how each experience shaped my growth as a PM.

When the offer finally came through, the recruiter highlighted how clearly I communicated my ideas. It was never about perfection—it was always about how I explained my thought process and showed genuine curiosity.

It didn't go how I expected because I thought it would be much worse (I catastrophise like that at times). Looking back, preparation and genuine storytelling made all the difference.

Currently going through some negations on an internal role. I’m currently at 88k and they offered me 100k for a position that requires a lot more work. Do you guys think it’s easier to land a higher salary when applying externally rather than internally? Also this is for a territory sales management role. They stated 120k+ is extremely high for that role. What do you guys think? Playing the game?

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Toronto banks: remote or not? They sometimes post jobs where it doesn’t say it’s remote, but no branch/ location/address either. Then you get an interview and they tell you it’s remote/hybrid(1-2-3days, take your pick)/on-site. So, if you work at TD, Scotia, RBC, could you let everybody know in the comments what’s the deal for each? Are you remote, on-site, hybrid of some sort?

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!

Would folks be open to participating in a “PM Office Hours” style discussion?

Flexible on format etc; here’s what I’m thinking:
- We choose a particular problem for a week (/month?) which a lot (all?) PMs face regularly. E.g. “stakeholder mapping”
- we have a “Fishbowl Live event” where we (practicing PMs) can discuss what we have seen work / not work/ brainstorm solutions for someone with a specific problem.

The idea is to provide multiple peer perspectives, and hopefully something useful
