Compared to other advanced countries, we are epically failing when it comes to paid maternity/paternity leave. Various (blue) states have some employee friendly paid leave laws but none come close to other advanced democracies.

This is the reason why I envy my Canadian friends. I have a friend who just gave birth and she was on maternity leave for a year and she's receiving support from the government as well. Our government lacks sympathy and understanding for mothers and this is just so heartbreaking.
