The unlimited PTO policy is a scam and you can’t convince me otherwise. At my last firm, we had 3 weeks of vacation and I took every day of it. At my current firm with unlimited leave, I’ve taken four days off in two years because the peer pressure to stay available is crushing. Has anyone actually successfully used unlimited time without getting a passive-aggressive email from their supervisor?

Of course it is more beneficial for the employer and you have to take the initiative to make it happen. Limited vacation, especially use it or lose it, has a psychological effect that makes you to want to use it so that you don’t leave anything on the table. You feel ripped off if you don’t.

like

Are you gonna get fired for taking it? If not, that’s on you.

Had successfully used many times and no passive aggressive emails. Are you setting your team up for success during your absence and not contributing to the peer pressure when others take time off?

If you do billable work on a given PTO/vacation day, do you still count that day as vacation? Or do you get that vacation day "back"? Or do you only get the part that you billed "back"? (Or some other option.)

I’m in a little of a pickle but a good one. Offer A. Established “start up” doing well financially and projected to hit profitability. 130k base. Stocks offered, unlimited PTO, and 70% Medical covered. Offer B. Is at a business much larger…90k salary with 10% bonus and generous stock offering. Titles are different which is why the pay is much different. I know some may think it is a no brainer but offer A allows me to grow the department ground up whereas offer B id be apart of to just different

I have a Deloitte PDM offer. I’ve read about the positives/negatives and I’m so torn. When my recruiter says I’ll have “144 hours” of PTO (18 days), will I definitely still run into the utilization trap of not being able to take it? Are all projects 40-42 hr weekly caps? Third question: I’m new in the DC area, are PDMs invited to firm socials? Trying to make friends! Thanks in advance

Solid tips or strategies on cutting back on alcohol? My bf & I were moderate drinkers before the pandemic, but over the year I’m fairly confident we’ve become heavy drinkers (6-7days/wk). I’m stressed about it and have mentioned cutting back for a while, but he insists we’re fine. I find it rly difficult to go cold turkey or cut by myself when he’s still drinking as “normal” and we share our living space. We’re aware of all the health risks, but that alone hasn’t changed us. All advice welcome!
