At this point, I have the toxic job and nightmare boss for 50k…. So. Please. Point me in the direction toward the money and I’m sprinting.
I understand! I am absolutely dreading it. Admin and staff definitely tried to bully me because I didn’t want to be in their clique (an understatement.) It was the 2nd lowest point in my life.
“Hurt people hurt people.” I hope you have a beautiful year. I hope that person heals and treats you and others with respect.
I don’t like the perspective of this article. Why should we have to pick either good pay or an environment that isn’t toxic? We are entitled to both. It’s not like we were just handed our degrees. I paid for four years of college, then paid for my Masters. I didn’t get a free ride. We are all deserving to work in a place where we are respected. The problem here is that most of us work in a system with weak, fearful leadership that won’t support us. This is not our fault. We shouldn’t have to pick one or the other, period.
I agree BOTH should be the norm. My choice was not about pay vs respect but pay vs happiness with my job. I initially had multiple offers and took a job at a smaller and lower paying district where I was asked to start an AP course and teach honors classes, rather than be low-man in seniority at a larger district where I would wait a long time to teach advanced coursework. I wanted to love my job and I knew this schedule best suited my background and teaching skill set. Don’t regret it at all. Have had both respectful and not respectful leadership over the years due to the ever revolving door of administrators. I would advise a fellow teacher to move to a district where the move improves the quality of the work but not if it only improves the quantity of the pay with other sacrifices.
Better school for who? The kids or you? You do whatever benefits you. If on the long run you are sure there IS better opportunities yes!! Status No!!
Why can’t teachers expect a decent wage and working conditions along with community support? I am TIRED of thinking I should have to choose!

All of those expectations will probably never be met for teachers. That is why many teachers are leaving the profession.
I took a pay cut. It is detrimental to your mental and physical health to stay where you’re not comfortable. I’m glad that I left because within two years I had surpassed my former salary and I have peace on at work.

I agree. I would rather make less and work a job I love than make more money but hate my job. No matter how much money you make, it isn't going to be worth mental health and physically being sick because of the "toxins" in the workplace.
I’ve considered it, especially when it comes to positions where I could contribute to a more positive learning environment. Sometimes, it’s not just about the salary but the overall job satisfaction.
Better school, support, colleagues. If it’s real. The problem is that the grass isn’t always greener. But if it’s true, mental and physical health are far more valuable than money.

My husband told me yesterday about a woman at his job who left a few months ago for a "better" job. She is returning back to her former job because the better job was awful and did not give her all the perks she was expecting.
Yes, all day long I will take a small pay cut to be in a school where I feel like I’m home and appreciated. I gave up a 1 minute drive to work for a 20 minute drive for that very reason. There are many things that are more important than money as long as you can feed yourself and your family.
I might be able to get a higher paying teaching job at a district closer to my home, but I definitely wouldn’t have the small case loads and classes I have now. I might have the wonderful community I have now but it would take some time for me to build relationships with coworkers and families. I have a great work life balance now and I can’t imagine leaving my district just for the money!
Honestly OP, no I have not thought about it. And the only reason is because I cannot afford to take a pay cut. I am barely making enough to pay bills now let alone taking a pay cut. I don't have the luxury of thinking about taking a pay cut because that would stress me out haha.

A pay cut would definitely be very stressful. I would love to start my own doggie daycare, but I need the gosh-awful health insurance our corporation offers
