This is one thing I’ve found fairly unique to Salesforce and akin to my time in Cybersecurity and I’ve hated.

People are sold these boot camps or programs as a quick path from a totally unrelated or non-tech field to being an SF Admin/Cyber analyst for life-changing money.

The reality is it’s not that simple, or everyone would be successful. 10% may be successful by grit or dumb luck, but in both industries the ratio of people trying to break into it is skewed so far it’s insane.

I think now, more than ever, you also have people looking to switch careers and industries. I’ve been outspoken towards the notion that you hire for people and potential, not skills that can be taught.

The problem comes when industries claim they are open, in fact WANT this diversity of talent, and yet we don’t hear a lot of success stories. Because these leaders truly are afraid to hire what they deem unknown.

Having relevant certifications, boot camps, (emphasis on the relevant) is another way for people to enhance their skillsets and show a more direct correlation of skill transference.

like

100%. And you are right, despite what anyone claims the certs and/boot camps guarantee you nothing.

This is interesting because I’m in the field and would like to have as many certs as this person!

likefunny

I can see how that could happen. I’ve interviewed people in the past and many had certs and no practical experience. Most didn’t even have personal projects.

I’m in a lot of Salesforce Facebook groups and enjoy reading the posts from people looking to get in. I don’t want to knock anyone looking to get a job but they usually start with a google search for “work from home jobs” rather that genuine interest in tech.

Bradley Rice over at Talent Stacker is making an absolute killing selling unobtainable dreams

So is Salesforce Ben and Marty Gessner from Focus on Force, but at least these two have some tangible value as a self-paced/organized study plan layout for SF certs.

What BR does, and he does it daily with his incessant emails is such a snake oil grift— but who am I to tell people what toilet they should flush their money down?

Background: Currently making 95k/160k OTE at a boutique research and consulting firm. I’m happy but we’re extremely flat with little to no opp for promotion in the next 2+ years.
