Highly depends on your situation. I went without one for as long as I could (eg until kids showed up) and don't regret it. We'd rent a car for short term trips etc. That said, with a car you can choose to live in a lower cost area of your city and make up some of that $$ difference.

Consider pricing out rentals or Zipcars if this is what's driving it for you. Your company may have a great discount you can use for personal use too.

I hate cars and hate how expensive they are. They go down in value the moment you sign on the dotted line and pull out of the dealership. That being said, I have to buy one soon and it kills me a little inside lol.
Pay cash if you can or else finance part of it if you can get a really low rate. I hate debt though so I usually just pay it off.
