I did not watch this video but my stance has always been that points only have value if you have the time to find the best deal for them. If you’re not going to use them well or in a good time frame, just take the cash
Makes sense!
I used to be solely team cash back. I have four credit cards that can give me 5.25% cash back up to a certain point every quarter. I finally made the switch to points and value them significantly more when I have upcoming travel. If I can get four or five times Points that I can transfer to airline, I will be able to get better value than my 5.25% cashback.
Also, if you live by a smaller airport, points give you access to flights with either less connections or a better time that would be significantly out of reasonable reach buying in cash. For example, it usually costs about $6000-$8000 for me to fly to Asia with only one connection or I can’t even get that route to pull up. It typically costs me 55,000 points and it always shows up when I’m shopping with miles.
Rising Star
Points are much better if you're willing to do the work. At the very least, you can get medium value from Chase through their travel portal (1.25x or 1.5x) or transfers to Hyatt (even "bad" redemptions hit 1.5x pretty easily). Only gets better from there if you care enough to find it.
Pro
Generally speaking, points are better, but if you're not really into traveling (usually the best points redemption), or don't charge much, cash back can be better.
