Better hands on experience than biglaw firms but low odds of partnership and longevity long term and associates get treated poorly (known as a sweatshop).

At least 10 years ago it was definitely not a work-life balance firm. Associates were expected to bill 2400+/year for partnership track, but were paid Cravath scale. Not sure how it is for Technical Advisors. Last I checked, they still hadn’t climbed back up to their all-time high number of attorneys before the 2016 layoffs.

I summered there a while ago and it definitely wasn’t the typical summer experience. I felt overworked.

Good firm to get experience, but not somewhere you should stay for 20 years.

I’m intrigued but I want to know 2 things:

2. Realistic market opportunity/opportunity to crush quota (obv dependent on many things)

Background: Currently making 95k/160k OTE at a boutique research and consulting firm. I’m happy but we’re extremely flat with little to no opp for promotion in the next 2+ years.

How much of a pay cut are you willing to take to (hopefully) re-find purpose in your job?

My Context: work in tech, company has HQ in the Bay but I live in Canada. Single, no kids, 1 mortgage, no debts.

TC: ~200k USD (60% base / 40% equity). I put very low effort, completely disengaged and unmotivated, with anxiety building up. Don’t like the company, but very few companies can match where I live

I’m being offered ~110k to work more, better title, fun project and company

What’s your story?

I’m a non-TX immigration attorney mentoring a UT student who went to my undergrad. He’s done incredibly well in OCI and pre-OCI. Thus far, he’s landed interviews with (all in Houston): Baker Botts, Sidley Austin, Kirkland, Winston Strawn, Reed Smith, Norton Rose, and Locke Lord. Also Perkins Coie in Dallas. He’s leaning transactional, but also open to litigation. Any insights/advice on these firms in the TX market? Any to avoid?
