Most good PMs will appreciate anyone from any discipline who truly understands, works within, and advances the ways of working they have established. Become an expert and an advocate. Seeek their guidance and their input. There's enough overlap in the Venn of AM/PM that it will make the transition, whether organic or discrete, easier - i.e start by walking the walk.
Have you tried talking to HR or management about switching internally?
I have not been on the accounts side, but I have worked with many account supervisors and coordinators. There are lots of transferable skills. Tailor your CV to highlight PM-supporting tasks like managing resources (budget and production), monitoring and maintaining processes and managing scope and expectations. Brush up on agile and scrum workflows.
Your soft skills are an asset. Working with clients is super valuable. You will have to reflect that same level of attention back onto your team. Keep everyone updated as needed.
The good news is companies are always looking for good PM's. The bad news is there is lots of competition right now (every posting on LinkedIn has 100+ applicants). I'm not sure of the quality of these applications, but I suspect a bit of extra tailoring goes a long way to get noticed. Check postings regularly and try to be within the first 50 or so to apply.
Always be networking and set up coffee chats with colleagues you have previously worked with. Let them know you are interested in making the switch.
Be unwaveringly confident with your skills. If you have the rizz to talk to clients on the regular and sell your company's capabilities, you have the rizz to sell your own skills.
Good Luck!
I was a brand exec and moved to PM to be less client facing and here I am, being more involved on account/brand things. Definitely make sure you understand the role before you sign up!
