Agree with pwc2. No social security and Medicaid taxes for us. Also if you live in US more than 3 years you might file 1040 as a resident. Please read from IRS. New thing is we can e file this year!
Tax Consultant and PwC2 Wrong. That form is available to international students if they have ssn. They just can't use it to claim deduction if their income is less than what they pay and if they are not resident. Second, after 5 years, students on f-1 are considered resident for tax purposes and pay medicare and social security just like greencard holders and citizens. I actuall get the IRS involved to verify this when I started work with EY on OPT. EY refused to deduct ss and medicare even though I was in my 6th year here. They only start deducting that when I got my H1B but the IRS agent told me to keep all the email communication with EY payroll to back up my case if later they happen to audit mine.
1. If you had been here for over 5 years, you're considered resident alien for tax purposes. You should be paying ss and medicare taxes on your 6th calendar year. You can use turbo tax at this point. If < 5 years, you have to use sprintax and glacier tax and cannot claim anything other than your income.
2. If you paid for tuition at all in 2016, your school will issue 1098T for you to use if you're resident alien. If you have been here for over 5 years and paid tuition in 2016 but haven't received 1098T, I suggest you contact your school.
3. I-20 tuition doesn't mean anything. What matters is what you actually paid and how long you had been here.
2 ways
1. STEM extension
2. CPT
If you use turbotax, you can put that amount from your 1098-T and it will calculate for you
That 1098 T forms are only for us citizens or residents. I didn't deduct it any year. Also you should file form 1040 NR
I don't think you can use 1098T amount as an international students. Besides does TurboTax lets you file 1040NR free? You probably will have that option if you are considered a resident for tax purposes where you file the 1040. The only benefit we get is social security and Medicare taxes are not deducted from the pay check when you are on F1
I may not know a lot about tax for us resident but I for sure know all the rules for international students
@EY2 I called EY Payroll 5 times, they didn't deduct my taxes, so I gave up on that. I keep the ticket number they opened.
Out of topic, but to OP how did you get to keep working in US even though you didn't get H1B? I'm very nervous for this year. Might have to move to Cayman Island if I don't get the visa
How do you use CPT if you have already graduated? I didn't get my H1B last year and had to leave the firm. What's going on in Cayman Island?
STEM. My school had Info Systems major as qualifying major for stem visa-- which you can extend upto 24months now thanks to Obama. I wasnt an accounting major, but as far as i know and have seen my friends, you cannot work/ intern at big4s with CPT visa. Not sure if it's an accounting thing..
Contd. since im still categorized as student working for practical training, can I say i attended school in 2016? (I graduated 2015 but i still get i-20 and the renewed on says im student till 2020)
^EY yes i use turbo tax! what if i didnt receive that form from school 1098T, can i still add?
It should be available for download from your student account. You may want to check it out
What's OPT visa
PwC1 - OPT visa is optional practical training visa for students prior to apply for H1-B work visa. It allows F-1 students to work on a student visa
Damn I don't know any of those words. I want to move abroad
You can only deduct if you are resident for tax purposes
Also the school should issue a 1098t for you to claim deductions
