Transactional junior in Big Law that wants to switch to Lit. Firm MP not willing to allow switch due to recent loses in our transactional practice group. Am I crazy for thinking of going to a boutique lit firm that does white collar, ID (products liability and more higher end ID), and some regulatory work? The lateral market is just not there right now, but I’m on my way to year 3 and I don’t want to be stuck in my practice area.

What geographical area are you in? I’m in a litigation-related field trying to switch back to transactional and would love to take your place lol

West Coast 😂

I’m at a mid-market higher-end ID lit firm. We have a white collar group and do some commercial lit. It’s a mixed bag and hard(ish) work but the people are less viper pit type A grinders.

I tell folks that it’s 40-50% of the pay in exchange for 70-80% of the work of BigLaw (I’m NEP, 15 yrs out and make $250k all in). But if you value time more than money, that 20% decrease in work is nice. Plus, it’s not an up-or-out partnership model.

Depending on the insurance co, the tasks you’re doing, etc., it can actually be harder to bill hrs in ID than in BL, bc the insurers limit the types of tasks you can bill for and nit pick at your time.

So I don’t agree w/ that necessarily. But maybe it’s true. Idk.

I like 1/3 of what I do. I’m Meh about 1/3. And I hate 1/3. But I think that’s a fair scenario for any job. I couldn’t really see myself doing anything else.

I like medium stakes cases where there’s a big fluffy insurance policy to pay up if things so south. It’s like boxing rather than a knife fight.

Some ppl will look down on you and that sucks but whatever. My ibanker friends look down on their Vault10 lawyers so there’s always someone better than you!

It is in appropriate to ask what the compensation for a position is after a first interview if they want you to go on three more and the interviewers on my first told me that was above their pay grade to tell me?????

Seems kind of ridiculous for a business to want to waste so much time to find out after a handful of interviews that the pay isnt aligned with my needs ......

I can see in biglaw not bringing up knowing damn well if you get an offer itll likely be high, but this is a midsize

I’m so bad at writing the background/ facts section for briefs… it always gets heavily edited and no one is giving me constructive feedback other than “advocate more”. In contrast, my legal argument section is generally without edits. For context, first defense lit job post appellate clerkship. Is this normal?? Any tips for getting better other than “advocating more”?
