Mixture of both. Some Europe places are not that card friendly
CSR for all places that accept card unless there's a cash discount or place looks super shady
Good luck using a credit card in Germany. In the UK, almost everywhere takes contactless (Apple/Android pay) or credit cards. Europe has a lot of variety so you need to be more specific for us to be able to help you
Taking out of money out of you TD Bank from random ATMs is totally fine btw - they reimburse ATM fees. Not sure if rate will be different tho...
Depends on which countries you are going to. I just got back from Turkey and chase wouldn’t put a protection notice on my debit card bc of increased fraud concerns but they would for my CSR. I got cash in my layover at Heathrow and then used my CSR for everything else
Use Charles Schwab or similar no fees debit card for some cash to be safe and use CSR when you can.
I’ve taken a larger amount of cash out w my capital one debit card to avoid fees when I arrived and to hopefully only have to take money out once and used my CSR whenever I could otherwise.
The CSR lacks pin capability for offline terminals (e.g., ticket kiosks) so you may need cash as a backup for things like transit tickets. Also, you’ll generally want to tip in cash at restaurants. You can technically add a couple Euros to your total on the machine, but it’s somewhat likely that the extra Euros will just end up in the owner’s pocket.
Contactless is the way to go where available because it doesn’t require a signature. However contactless is sometimes limited (€30 max in France). But most people have no idea what Apple/Android pay is, and asking confuses them so just look for the little contactless symbol to pop up on the machine and try it.
Is it possible to get a CSR that has offline pin capability? I know Amex used to send you one if you called and requested it
