He's not as racist, dangerous, homophobic as radical Islam...it's a holy war. You may not believe it now and you may not believe it in 10 years but I guarantee you that at some point you are gonna realize what is happening. Is he a douche? Absolutely but these people are religious fanatics and they will not stop. Was 9/11 not bad enough? What happens when they get their hands on a nuke? Or chemical weapon and use it on our cities? What happens then? We just make a bunch of excuses? This is about western ideals and the continuation of society. Too many people have sacrificed their life to just absolve our sovereignty in the name of hurt feelings.
@Barclays 1. "...threatened by the bigotry, anger, and intolerance". You mean exactly what a large number of followers of Islam subscribe to? It makes me laugh when defenders of lgbt and women's rights defend people who stand for the exact opposite of those ideals. Sometimes I feel like Americans take democracy for granted. It's a privilege, not a right, to be living here as an immigrant from a country that has rampant corruption and a dictatorship. I would not like to see people who believe in violent oppression come and undermine the core values that make this country great.
Unfortunately we can't have honest debates about any issues because people now just say racist and bigot at the first sign of trouble. This country is a melting pot of people that assimilated and wanted to assimilate into the new American culture. Today that is not the case and that is the problem.
Western ideals are threatened more by the bigotry, anger and intolerance that propelled Trump to prominence than radical Islam. Radical Islam threatens our lives. Americans and other freedom-loving societies need to figure out how to deal with that threat. Barring entry to 1.6b people based on their ancestry is not the answer to that problem.
America won't last forever, nor will liberty and freedom. Once it's gone from this place it's gone forever. Not willing to take chances for fear of hurting feelings. Once these guys inevitably get a weapon of mass destruction into the US or Europe and use it, merely banning them from entering the country will be considered nice.
@MS1 discriminating against people based on their faith is bigoted you twit. Increase surveillance of American communities for nothing other than their heritage is an violation of principles. I don't know what the answer is, but I know trump's proposal isn't a solution. Be honest with yourself and call a spade a spade.
@barclays1 go look up the origin of calling a spade a spade before you start calling people bigots. This is more than about religion this is a war. Would we have let a bunch of Germans and Japanese into this country during World War 2? Absolutely not. I agree that this is against American principles but at some point we have to treat this situation differently. No one is saying we should exterminate all Muslims but we need to certainly be very meticulous about who comes into this country. This stuff is just getting started. Go and read about the crusades not much has changed with that religion.
Specifically talking about internment/surveillance; It's not about feelings, it's about a government singling you out because of guilt by association. I won't tolerate my government singling out Muslims. The threat of nuclear attack is significant but we can't let the fear of that rule us. To be pithy, "those who give up Liberty for safety deserve neither". I won't sacrifice other citizens Liberty for my safety.
@ja1 I did not say the majority I said millions and millions which is a small percent of the Billion Muslims in the world. Not all Germans supported the Nazis either. You can't surgically win a war. You either go all in or you don't.
"We'd rather have 49 people die than apprehend and subsequently offend one terrorist" - Millennial Liberals
Can you imagine if the government persecuted you because of your Christianity? That objection you have is the same one I have against trump's anti-Muslim rhetoric!
This country was built on the idea that we do not all agree on everything . We are tolerant free nation that encourages debate, free thinkers. We need to supports each other's difference rather then worry about our own opinions. We need to get away from the mindset that if someone doesn't live the way you want them to that you can just buy a gun and kill them, or bomb them. That is not ok. We need to get back to being brave enough to accept that others have different opinions and beliefs. Because that's what America was built on.
There will always be threats to liberty and freedom. The solution is not to ban liberty and freedom. That there hadn't been another 9/11 in spite of the hate within radicalized Islam and the willingness to target civilians makes me question truly how bad the threat is.
Even if you became ok with this ban, that wouldn't stop an American (like in Orlando) from shooting up people he didn't like. These ridiculous policy proposals wouldn't even have any effect. I don't get it 🤔😣
I will never understand how liberals campaign so hard for gay rights and women's rights, only to support people who terribly oppress both women and gays. Just shows you what kind of politically illiterate people you're dealing with.
By being bigots towards an entire religion only fuels the hatred and resentment towards the United States. He blatantly classifies and mislabels an entire religion based on the actions of a few. That kind of thinking is so small and I'm ashamed of my own country for supporting a man with such idiotic rhetoric. We are literally supporting a guy that has a the common sense and the temperament of a two year old. C'mon man.
.... And
How about a respectful mourning period?
Being a resident or a citizen of country is exactly that, a right to live in that country. Free of target harassment, I mean "surveillance."
Got news for ya buddy...me, you and everyone else is being watched. Citizens also have a right to have a problem with a religion in which the participants believe that religious law supersedes the law of the state.
