I would say no to insurance defense (as an insurance defense attorney). In my area, employment has a higher earning potential. I have done very little med mal to give input.
Ever think of doing plaintiff-side personal injury instead of insurance defense?
Much more rewarding. Financially you have no ceiling. No billing your time. Certainly some cons tho- having to deal with real people/real clients can be a challenge. Also more pressure on this side for obvious reason. I’ve done both and can’t fathom going back to insurance defense work, but plaintiff side is not for everyone.
If you go to a firm with 2200 hours required, you'll be in for a huge culture shock.
If you’re going to a v10 probably worth it
I prosecuted for 10 years and went private for 7. I started in employment plaintiff work the first year; my state’s law blows chunks and my litigation skills were worthless. I turned to plaintiff personal injury and called it a specialty: ‘crime victim representation.’ Because that’s what I was doing. It was fabulous and I highly recommend it.
I did labor/employment and med mal defense. Working for insurance companies and/or government (self-insured entities) in these areas is pretty miserable. Gov’t requires low hourly rates (so you have to do more billables to be valuable to your firm) and insurance companies now have AI automatically review bills and you may find yourself having to rebill with justifications as to why taking a deposition cannot be handled by a paralegal. Of course, you can’t bill for the time it takes to re-bill. Of the two main practice areas I preferred med mal. I’d rather see horrific photos of bedsores and study thousands of pages of medical records than have to deal with the petty b.s. that comes with employment cases (whether on the employee or employer side, but usually both).
What area ? I’m in NYC and why no to insurance defense ?
The first firm I worked at was a mill that was paid a flat fee for cases so they took every case and I was always drowning. The second firm I worked at didn’t have that issue but it’s a field where good work means more cases and more work.
My firm has an office in New York!
