Turning down MBB offer b/c realize I want to be a SWE (eventual PM) or Data Scientist. FAANG folks; do I pursue a coding bootcamp, a Masters in Science, or MBA? Success = best odds at placement into FAANG.

If you have an offer in hand, it would be absurd to turn it down with nothing else in hand. Having MBB on your resume, even for a year before changing a career to SWE, will probably give you better odds of jumping into FAANG then any of those above options.

like

A1 - to be more clear, I am not saying MBB “in lieu of” technical training, I am saying MBB + those things. As in get the fairly exclusive credential on your resume and get technical - just like you noted in your “stronger fit” comment.

If you want to work in tech - then go work in tech. Don't waste your time with consulting firms.

Now if you don't have any experience in tech - there are about 50+ people on TikTok, YouTube, Instagram that share how they made the jump to tech from a non tech background.

The common them is that they all spent about 2 years self studying (or self studying + code bootxamp) to get there. You can tell that learning to code became their life.

My advice to you is 1) start small and validate that you love coding. Do a few tracks with code academy or something similar. 2) pick a job that will allow you to spent 10-15 hours a week immersing yourself in tech after work. McKinsey and most high end consulting firms will not give you the free time you require. 3) don't do a computer science master's or coding bootxamp for now. You want to do this journey on your own at first. You will learn much more by getting started on your own than being spoon fed. On too of that - every great tech person I know was (and still is) a tinkerer. They do things on their own time

Good luck - tech is an awesome path

Are you cool with skipping SWE? If so just do an MBA and recruit for PM.

like

you should ask this on the Blind app, you’ll get better educated answers.

I am just a little concerned though, did you already turn down MBB offer? Are you from any type of technical background - coding project, technical work experience, or even BS holder?
MBA is not the right route for FAANG SWE/Data Scientist, not bad for FAANG PM if from top MBA.

like

Here is my take:

coding bootcamp - Breaking into SWE is very possible via a bootcamp but will be hard to break into big tech firms like FAANG. For PM, it's hard but possible. Data science is definitely not worth the bootcamp. It's very watered down and the DS is already very competitive.

Masters of science - It helps for SWE and getting into big tech firms but of course, no guarantee. For, PM, it's easier to break in. And it definitely helps for Data Science. This is probably one of the viable options that'll help you break DS.

MBA: lol no. Even PM is super hard to get through an MBA

With one to two years in Operations post MBA, certainly possible. I have a few friends who’ve done it. I think it’ll be dependent on the MBA.

like

If you want to be a PM, you can potentially get that role first at a smaller company or startup first and then start learning those technical skills on the side. SWE, you’ll want to start tinkering on your own and maybe invest in a masters after you’ve confirmed you really like the job. Similar for data scientist, read Elements of Statistical learning and do the practice questions first, then decide if you want to do a masters in stats. I don’t like bootcamps, but it is a fallback option

As a data scientist, an MS in CS is the way to go. MBAs sometimes land product science roles, but that’s usually a fancy title for data analyst. You do not necessarily need to detour to SWE to land PM, but it does help.

How does an MS in CS compare to MS in Data Science or Stats (for someone looking to become a data scientist)?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice. I’ve been working as a RC for a tech company for 15 months making 45k (I know I’m underpaid) and I’m looking to pivot. I feel really burnt out in this role and would love to transition to something else, perhaps another department. I don’t really want to be in an entry level role again, so what kinds of jobs should I be looking at where I can transfer over my skills easily? I also have customer service experience but would love to stay away from that. TIA!
