Title inflation - tech firms calling everyone a data scientist even if they are doing something like making dashboards.

like

My favourite was an intern a few years ago who called himself a Data Scientist on LinkedIn. Was at a smaller construction company at the time. LI said ‘First data science hire’. Baffled me as I worked in the Analytics team and the enterprise data was quite gatekept. Ended up speaking to him at work drinks and he said he does all his ‘data science’ in excel. Made regression lines and whatnot. No SQL, Python or notebooks, really got a chuckle out of me

Aren’t you an LLM expert now? AI and data science is so 2013

like

Lol it's funny because it's not like data scientist really sounds much more advanced than data analyst. If anything "analyst" is a more descriptive and accurate title. I wonder why Silicon Valley doesn't just call them "data rockstars" hahah

Also everyone calls themself a data scientist even if they've just seen a dashboard before. kind of like 5 years ago, everyone was a product manager

Sf analysts going by data science title for more clout
