We have a client who calls literally every single day asking if there's news on their case. We filed the motion three weeks ago, and the court just hasn't ruled yet. I get that they're anxious, but how do you handle this without sounding annoyed?

I would just explain to them general expected timelines for their case. Most people don’t know how slow these types of things are.

I'd bill for it, Jim. That's what I'd do. I'd bill for it.

Explain the process. It helps.

Dealing with people who don't understand how things work is part of the job. And so is dealing with people who, to be honest, have something wrong with them. It's all a lesson in patience.

Well you bill them for the call. But you realize that’s the job you signed up for. Professional handling.

like

Easy. Don’t let it bother you. How I see it they ARE the ones paying the office to keep it going and they have every right to call every day IF they so choose. Just repeat yourself with a smile. NOW, IF they become hateful, rude, or mean to you then tell your attorney. My attorney doesn’t take that crap from clients or allow clients to treat us with any kind of disrespect. They will cut them off immediately, do a motion to withdraw as counsel, refund them what is left and forget them. I loved loved loved my attorney.

And thst is exactly what they are. That is a good description and phrase. I like it! Best one yet! Thank you!

I suspect this is a plaintiff firm and you wouldn't be able to bill. Suggest scheduling a weekly call so you can both be assured you'll connect.

Chaotic evil answer: tell them to call the court instead.

funny

Straight up when the client retains ur fir. Family court has their docket , common pleas, non litigation, real estate. We do s lot of hand holding but bring a professional means you know the ropes. Let her know that while the motion wax filed 3 weeks ago, the other attorney has x days to respond, etc. & that tge court scheduled these based upon how the administrative judge schedules motion hearing, not emergency hearings, etc. Always advise how the motion hearings work & evidence u have yo gather yo make sure ur position is tge position the court dhoulf uphold. Alway put them on a schedule

Moving to Dubai to start with Kearney in November.

Considering buying an apartment instead of renting as my parents are in the Middle east and gives greater control over living costs (landlords seem difficult?).

Anyone here owning an apartment in Marina? As Australians we are keen to have shops, cafes, gyms in walkable distance…any other areas apart from Marina that can offer this?

Appreciate any guidance or insights.

Networking question here. A retired partner at the firm I used to work out reached out to me recently about attending an afternoon during the week (b4 4/30) with one of his long time clients. The partner and I have kept in touch since I joined my new firm and I feel like his invitation is a great networking opportunity since the client (who I have worked with before) is on a number of boards. Torn as how to request off as an S3. Could materialize to nothing but could be good for reconnecting.

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.

Additional Posts in Paralegals

I currently work at an international law firm (4 years) and recently accepted an offer to go in house. The main attorney I support did not take the news well and was very angry with me. I feel awful and beaten down as I don’t want to upset anyone but the new role is fully remote and a nice pay bump. Looking for words of encouragement that I did the right thing. I feel awful 😞

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? I’m not the decision maker, but it’s been a few weeks with very few applicants. I’m curious if there’s something hurting the firm in its search.

Looking for a REMOTE Paralegal Position in the Colorado Springs, CO area - preferably in Family or Criminal Law - If anyone knows of anything. If someone knows of a recruiter in that area as well, please let me know!

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.
