I believe children could read the room faster than adults ever could. It couldn’t be separation anxiety because your son has already been attending daycare. Follow your gut.
If the vibes are off, switch
How many other options do you have? In my city, daycare/preschool openings are a scarce commodity.
Get onto their waiting lists, and keep on them for updates if you need. I wish you luck!
Switch. We knew after a week and spent the second week securing a new place. My 9 month old son who was a happy, independent, child became clingy, Sobbing and cranky baby during his 2 weeks at that place. We switched him to a new place and by the third day of the new school we had our happy baby back. So glad we didn’t ride it out and wait to see. I’d pull if you can.
I want to add I felt the same way about a daycare and ignored it, thinking it was my usual hypervigilance. One day, my daughter fell on the playground and broke her collarbone. They didn’t tell us she was hurt until pickup, and even then it was very casual. “She fell. She’s been sleeping.” We took her straight to the ER. She was walking around with a broken bone for over four hours.
Omg, I’m so sorry. I’d be furious. I hope she was ok otherwise!
