I went to a non-target MBA program and came out making 160K. It’s not always about what school you went to but your ability to hustle and network. I would consider networking and potentially switching firms especially if you’re gonna stay in consulting.
I agree. I went to a target school & got unlucky with my first job! Didn’t hustle and network .. didn’t take risks and now stuck in the profile… so just being in a target school may not be an answer to all your questions.
Not worth it if you’re not going into academia. Speaking from my own experience! Happy to chat!
You will waste a PHD in consulting, let’s be real, it isn’t about the money, you have an oppty to be a “lifetime” student and that seems appealing, go for it.
You came as entry level? That doesn’t sound like an MBA target school issue so much as an experience issue and target group issue. Did you not get any work experience before getting your degree? We don’t have much need for PhDs, particularly for a business PhD. MBA is the end business degree for working in consulting. A PhD in a stem field would take you further. Right now I’d say a business PhD would be making the same mistake twice on top of your added debt.
I came in as an experienced hire: senior analyst + 12 months experienced hire credit (24 months in total). Was promoted to consultant in less than a year from being hired. Also did bring a good amount of experience but it was totally different than consulting. (pharmacy operations, teacher, military officer)

Wouldn’t an MBA be faster if all you want is going back to consulting?

Not common but possible if you had a good enough reason
Explore switching firms first - the market is generous right now
Switching firms would be much faster to get your comp up to where it should be. Did you do the Accenture veteran program? (Read GI bill in one of your comments)
Came in through their military officer program. And yes it sounds like the only way is to switch firms.

You have an MBA and it hasn’t taught you to just consider switching firms in the ripest job market ever? Unless your MBA was right after undergrad it wouldn’t be hard to land a job that pays in that 160+ range. I think the comp bitterness and your interest in getting a PhD are two separate thoughts, don’t feel like you need to force them together. Fwiw, i don’t see phds in that field lending itself well to a consulting career tbh. Good luck
A few more details... I enjoy behavioral science and I'm fascinated by organizational culture, decision making, and effectiveness. I like to observe the differences between how my clients operate and also draw on what I've experienced with multiple units in the military. The PhD would be to reimmerse myself in an environment of intellectual curiosity and also earn a reputable degree.
Assume that I won't have to take on any additional debt thanks to PhD program stipends and my GI Bill. However, it would be 5 years of missed earnings opportunity.

It was great. I helped a school district with a $4.5B budget get better organized. I led a fund raising for a community center / food bank, we raised over $20M and built a facility with over 45 000 sq ft. I attended every sports and school event of both kids. I coached my son for 6 years. I was PTO treasurer and class "mom" for 6 years, 3 for each kid.
When my son went to college and my daughter turned 16 I went back to work. 16 year old girls don't want dad around as much.
I don't know any other couple that did this, but it was great, though I had never done anything but coaching previously. School and non-profit politics make corporate politics look like a 6th grade class treasurer election. Imagine a board with 50 members.
All an MBA is is power point presentations and group work. I will say this…if you become a prof at a decent B school you will make more than 160k a year for a 9 month salary. Look up UT Austin prof salaries in the b school if you think I’m lying
You can jump to a MBA salary role after a year. Keep networking and interviewing.
Unless you were targeting strategy there's no such thing as MBA vs non-MBA salary at Accenture.
