How small are we talking? If you’re talking about babies and toddlers, that’s not possible. You’re either cheating them or are cheating your job. Usually both.
Childcare is a massive expense, but that’s what we chose when we became working parents. And also why so many women choose not to return.
Definitely check if your agency has BrightHorizons benefits. They can help.
And if you have to cheat, cheat your job.
It's pure chaos. 4.5 year old. Sending you strong coffee and positive vibes
You don’t. You get daycare
While that's incredibly difficult, you're also still putting money towards retirement. One thing people often forget. Is it worth the sacrifice? I'm honestly not sure. I am the primary bread winner as the mom and I am extremely resented because they're only little for so little
It’s not possible for me. We have an au pair.

My wife and I do it and it's incredibly difficult. We are on the West Coast but work East coast hours, and we have our kid on a schedule where they get up at 10, so we have half the day. For the second half we tag team and one or both of us catches up during nap time or at night if need be.

It ain't a picnic
We have daycare… but for a couple months after parental leave, when we were still on the waitlist at daycare, my partner and I got a Google Calendar and blocked out when we would have meetings to make sure at least one of us was free and scheduled meetings around each other. It also meant I did most of my heavy work during nap times and after 5pm.
Also if your child is at least 2, there might be some “pre-school” once or twice a week classes you can enroll them in for 2-3 hours. They are usually through the park district or other community service. Usually cheaper vs traditional day care. But not available everywhere. And usually meant for kids who never went to daycare to learn some basics and socialization before public school starts.
Just curious, what did you plan on doing? Im not saying that in a judgy way. Did something shift? Living situation? Location? Remote vs onsite? My little brother lives right by my folks. I live an hour away but closer to NYC. He has the benefit of Nanny/Poppy help that I dont but I made that decision when I picked where I wanted to live. Btw, we have a 4.5 year old.
OP may be simply deciding on having a child in this environment e.g., considering trying but not pregnant or with a kid yet) and wondering feasibility in advance.
Can you get help from family or a mothers helper that can be there to play and read with you there for the big stuff? It’s really hard to work while parenting.
Not sure how old your child is but I did two different preschools. One in the AM and the 2nd in PM
Our problem is when the 16 month old is sick and can’t go to daycare. It’s been a challenge
Parent to parent, the first 2-3 years, your sick days no longer exist like they did. But your employer or boss should understand that when a baby is sick, you are sick. I found that the empathy that I got varied depending on my managers personal life. If they were parents, they got it. If they werent, and they were less understanding, then I wouldnt talk about the kid as much and I would just say that I was sick
