Big 4 and most others are 1800 hours per year for tax staff. Manager is 1700. Director 1500.

like

DT manager goal is 1800

55 hours minimum during busy season

like

80% utilization year round. Comes down to 30 client service hours a week. That being said, that’s a minimum and the 80% includes any administrative time, vacation, holidays, etc. so in reality, need to be closer to 35 billables a week.

like

Yes, would be like 32 for 80%

87% for Deloitte staff and senior 🥴

like

What? That’s crazy. PwC increased utilization target to 80% for associates and I still find it hard to reach.

A reminder to those who are stressed about your billable hours that your value is more than your pure productivity. To those stressed about relationships, relationships are hard even for non-lawyers, but you are absolutely worthy of love. It is an important reminder for all of us that you are worthy and you are valuable. Keep fighting!

Question re: salary. I’m thinking about accepting an offer at a small (4-6 attorneys) transactional firm. I would primarily be working on NDAs for clients. The role sounds great (no billable hours, fully remote, flexible hours/ can work from anywhere); however, the salary is $70K. I’m a new attorney, with only one year of experience. Does this salary seem low? If so, any advice on what someone in my position should ask for?

Ok, maybe this has been done before, but I want to get a real life sense of the difference between EPLI and Private L&E (management side) practices. Let's do a poll:

1.) Primary source of business: EPLI or Private Companies?

2.) Number of matters you are currently working on

3.) Average billable rate (your year)

4.) Normal working hours/wk

5.) Percentages: Litigation vs Counseling

6.) Type of firm: ID, Big 4, Boutique, BigLaw, etc.

I'll kick things off in comments.

Is it just me or the average billable work in infrastructure transactions has blown off steam in the last couple of weeks?

I’ve worked the last nine years for my state legislature as an attorney analyst, drafting and analyzing proposed legislation. I’ve primarily worked on health professional regulations. Next year, I will apply for student loans forgiveness under the public service program and would like a change. I know others who have gone into lobbying/government relations, but I would like to find other options to pursue. I’ve never done billable work so not sure if law firm life is for me. Any suggestions?

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

I’m a homeowner and we have a 3.25% on a $600k loan. Likely needing to upsize to a $1.5-2.0M home (VHCOL) because of kids, but balking at the idea of paying $6-8k/mo in interest charges alone.

Should I drop my current org where I joined a week before and join another one .

Hi all,

I just came to realise
Deutsche Bank has a fixed rule of max 30 to 35 % hike on fixed component and remaining 10 to 15% variable i.e. total 50% max hike you can ask for no matter how good, skilled you are.

Is it true?

Moving from big 4 firm to big 4 firm. Waiting for my salary and sign on bonus. Do you think it makes sense to ask for the sign on be applied to my salary? Like if offered 75k with 5k sign on then should I just ask for 80k no sign on. I don’t want to loose my bonus if I have stay a year or two. I also know there is a lot of tax coming out of bonuses. Either way it pretty much nets the same tax wise.

Is it me or does the newer generation value more intangible things that aren’t easily measured like work-life balance, fulfillment and purpose in work. Which makes it difficult for firms because that’s not something that is easily measured. Also, this is why there is “value” in crypto, NFTs and the metaverse. It’s a clash of the generations that value tangible things like money, houses, cars and one that values time, experiences, personal online image. Thoughts?
