It depends on what the source of the pain is, but NSAIDs are a got to for us to treat chronic pain in dogs. They help to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
I recommend many pet owners that come through to get their dogs more active. Many of them are overweight and that's why they are in pain
Physical therapy is helpful in improving mobility and alleviating pain in dogs with chronic conditions. This can include exercises, massage, and hydrotherapy.
Sometimes medication isn't needed. We prescribe alternative medicines half the time. Acupuncture and chiropractic care are amazing with managing chronic pain in dogs
I've heard of this. Even rubbing essential oils like eucalyptus on the joints can help with pain
How about: Medications: Veterinarians may prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, opioids, or other pain-relieving medications to manage chronic pain in dogs.
Physical therapy and rehabilitation: This can include exercises, massage, stretching, and hydrotherapy to improve mobility, flexibility, and muscle strength, which can help alleviate pain.
Acupuncture and chiropractic care: These complementary therapies can help relieve chronic pain and improve mobility in some dogs.
and....Diet and weight management: A balanced diet and maintaining an appropriate weight can help reduce pain and inflammation in some dogs.
Environmental modifications: Adjustments to the dog's living environment, such as adding ramps or steps to reduce the need for jumping or climbing, can help reduce pain and make everyday activities easier for the dog.
Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to treat chronic pain caused by conditions such as joint disease or spinal problems.
You can start with essential oils first. If it doesn't work, you can try physical therapy. Medication is usually our last option.
It depends on the source and the level of pain. If it is unbearable, then I highly suggest prescribing a pain reliever.
