I’ll share a tip that I’ve used to make my promotion case strong (and my response is only for “promotion”, there’s another story to get a high rating).
- 6-9 months prior to the promotion cycle, I initiated conversations with the SM and PPMD in a 1-1 skip level meet; told them about my work, showed them what I bring to the table, and asked them to consider any initiative that they could offer or consider me for. I told that I’m here for the long term game and am looking for promotion, not necessarily this year, but I would want my services to be accounted for and for them to not go wasted. This way, not just my leads but even the leadership noticed me.
- I deliberately made a futuristic commitment to complete a deliverables, meaning: if something could be completed in 1-2 weeks, I said 30 days. Reason: The Year-End meetings were scheduled after a month, and right before my YE review, I got to deliver a fine work deliverable to the PPMD. I knew that the PPMD would be in the panel because that’s a given. Now, apart from my Sr.Manager supporting my case, I even have the PPMD vouch for it and therefore, nobody questioned it.
To summarize, have a vision and then start planning backwards. Play the opportunities, play the timing, and network.

I tried something of the sorts but it doesn't seem to work for me. The guy I'm trying to replace has got a strong hand since he's got more industry exposure than me, and he's a big time sucker for all limelight, he plays all the games to pull the light even though that is ma who is working harder. He's on notice with no intention to continue and still pulls all the credit.
Guess I'll have to act quickly before it goes out if my hand.
