What’s AI going to do to law?
Contracts written, revised, negotiated, reviewed. For sure. Which means a lot of transactional law just got a lot more efficient and will therefore have a lot of experienced people chasing less opportunity.
Litigation will change substantially too, but ultimately someone has to stand up there and make the case.
Personally I’ve always been transactional/compliance oriented, always hated litigation, but that’s how I see things shaping up.
i think affordable housing will always be relevant. your choice really depends on where you want your career to go and how you compare salary to work life balance.
also curious to what you currently practice? bc if you’re switching into a new sector you’re just picking up additional skills. but if one of the jobs is just an extension of what you currently do, you’re kind of solidifying your future
I currently practice regulatory litigation. So yeah, you’re right, if I go with this job then I’ll just be solidifying my future.
There’s always reasonable ability to move from one relevant position to another, but you’re looking to do litigation, you should focus on finding a job in litigation. I wouldn’t be concerned about being pigeonholed into Affordable Housing if you’d like to pursue other specialties. Just off the top of my head, having the experiencing working with regulatory and local state authorities is relevant to a number of fields including construction and development, or a myriad of corporate law positions. I think you’re okay to accept the position that most interests you.
Actively looking for new employment and to keep being overlooked is frustrating. How do you stay motivated to keep going?!
My current job sucks lol also I’m applying for higher salaried positions so that motivates me.
If an in-house role is a potential future option, I would not get too narrowly focused on affordable housing.
I went from affordable housing to housing to in house. It all depends on what you want to do in house.
I started my legal career in affordable housing in 2008. It was great experience, especially then, and it’s been a great stepping stone to market rate transactional work. I think it depends on who you represent in the deals - government, developers, lenders, investors, etc. The broader your experience the better it will translate.
